Hello

Going to be spending a week near Tenderden on the Kent/Sussex border soon.

I've noted its close enough to Rye and Canterbury to visit - anything else that i shouldn't miss ?

Seems to be a few National Trust places too ?

thanks

Do visit Scotney Castle, you won't be disappointed, it is my favourite photographic site , it is national trust property
your first view of the turreted house in the valley, one of the few in the country

the mansion above is worth going into as well. If you do go make sure you have spare batteries and memory cards you will need them, there is the ice house and the boat house as well on the lake. i won't put up all the photos I have of the place but your shutter finger will be worn out by the time you leave. do go in the house at the top, it is fully furnished and left as was used

if you get time go on the Romney Hythe Dymchurch railway, it it the smallest commercial railway in at least europe. One railway i have been on many times. getting off at new romney gives you a chance to eat and have a look at the train sheds and museum, then catch the next train to continue onwards. You can ride up and down all day long if you want to and come out not only shaken but stirred as well

Then there is Dover castle does get crowded, but Hitler ordered in not to be bombed as he wanted it as his HQ when he defeated Britian

Those should get you started
Bodium castle is just a shell with a moat, not over interesting , Batemans house is ok if interested in inside old houses but the grounds are nothing to shout about

Bodiam Castle is worth a visit just for photographing and Tenterden has its own heritage railway, Kent and East Sussex Railway.

Park at Appledore and jump on a train, it goes across Romney Marsh calling at Rye and Winchelsea before Hastings

Worth noting that Bodium Castle currently is having some works done - was there recently and theres some ugly scaffolding around!

This was taken on 2nd September, have you been there more recently Will?

Dungeness and a little further away, the South Downs west of Lewes.

Hastings Old Town beach ... the largest beach-based fishing fleet is there and the boats and fishing paraphenalia are always interesting to photograph.

Another vote for Dungeness, its a whole world away and for Hastings Old Town - decent fish and chips as well, whats not to like.

I can vouch for the fish and chips, got some recently from the Old Town Fryer, some of the best for ages.
Also found a little street that runs parallel with the front, starts next to the West Cliff lift entrance, thinks its George St
Loads of cafes with tables outside and unusual shops, in the late summer sun sipping a beer it felt like being on the continent somewhere.

Not sure how far on the autumn colours are down in that neck of the woods, but Bedgebury National Pinetum is a beautiful spot. Haven’t been there for years, but used to visit regularly as it was a great location for Hawfinches.
