I took this of my son earlier today and I was pretty pleased with it.

I inherited my mum's Canon 550D a few years ago and she bought me a 40mm lens to go with it but I haven't really used it as much as I wanted to so I'm fairly new with all of this.

What do you think? I'd be keen to hear how I could improve the composition.

You’ve captured a nice moment - love the concentration. I like the rim lighting from the reading light but it would be improved if the light itself wasn’t in frame as it pull attention away from your son. Also not sure about the light on his neck. Try turning off the main light and playing with position of lamps etc. Try using lighting to get more separation between him and the background. Also I think he needs a taller stool! I think his forearms should be more horizontal?

Thanks for the comments Tom. Will give it another shot when he's next on there. Re the lighting on his neck; there's actually a window which is lighting him up from that direction. Will have a play and see what I can do either way to improve it.

The reflected light on the rail detracts from the subject- easy fix in Photoshop :)
