Ladybird attempt

Getting to grips with my new Nikon 105mm, here's the result of an hour or so with a ladybird I found on the window sill. I've yet to get a tripod and a diffuser - and I'm keen to try step focusing to get more of the subject in focus.

Any advice, suggestions much appreciated. I tried live view for the first time, and using the zoom in button to see closer detail of the subject to get it better in focus. Flash was used in TTL mode set to -1

Unfortunately you stripped the exif data from the shot so I cannot tell quite what went on.

The Dof is too shallow and the light is too harsh IMO a flash diffuser is needed though maybe not bought
Have you read these?

Thanks for the links and advice . I need to look into making or getting a diffuser. And need to study these links too. Thanks very much!!

My apperture and shutter speed should be available to see on flickr. Do you mean the more detailed info?

Thanks for pointing that out. Seemed to have been a pesky setting that seemed to be stopping them showing. Fixed now I think :)

Get the flash difffused. Tripod won't be necessary with flash, and to be honest insects are easiest taken hand held. I get a rough bit of focus via auto focus / or manual. Then move in and out to focus. If your flash recycles fast enough - burst a few shots. Pick the best.

Normally only use live view myself on tripod to take still things like flowers and shrooms.
