I didn't notice the lack of clouds until I re-read your post. I really like the sky as is and the light, composition are utterly gorgeous. The poor clear blue sky doesn't get much love in photography circles but shots like this bust the myth you need to have clouds in the sky to take interesting pictures.
 
That works really well the haze creating the colour helps make up for the clear sky

I guess it's down to personal preference and what the photographer is intending their image to portray.
For this shot, I cropped 2:1 to avoid the tension between the hugely negative space of the sky and the interesting foreground which I felt needed to dominate.
The haze and low horizon colour also helped, as Alf mentioned.
