The tiny town of Podalla in central Italy turns out for the annual celebration of the patron saint of the local churches. A mass in the larger of the two churches is followed by a procession through the 20 or so houses in Podalla, and celebrations end with refreshments in the church garden. As the exotic (i.e. non-local) newcomers to the community we were treated almost as guests of honour and my son got to help push the cart carrying the painting of the Madonna (not that he wanted to, being a stroppy teenager).
