Maybe Diesel Isn't Dead Yet

Hydrogen .......... why is that not the way forward. 100% clean ! Burning hydrogen produces only water vapour. Hydrogen can be obtained from water (electrolysis produces hydrogen and oxygen).

There is a higher explosion risk, but it will not be insurmountable.

There are difficulties with storage - hydrogen is the tiniest of atoms, and will diffuse through the walls of a container over time, plus it is EXTREMELY explosive when mixed with oxygen. In addition there are no natural supplies to be mined, and every bit will need generating using enormous amounts of electricity.

I,ve done my bit dropped from a 2.4 Volvo saloon to a much lower 2.0ltr Kia 4x4 ,needed to do it the caravan season fast approaches :LOL: :LOL:

Brilliant, I love my diesel car.

Unfortunately, (From the linked article)
Can it be retrofitted to diesel cars already on the road?
No, is the short answer. The changes (such as moving the SCR system closer to the engine and fitting a new turbocharger), would be prohibitively expensive.

never going to happen in cars, already hybrid is getting popular and eleccy will surge in the next ten years.
The government may allow it to be fitted to new HGV vehicles I think if super scrict controls are developed.
I hate dirty diesels too but don't think the answer is electric
I'm a fan of small efficient petrol engines

Says the man with a bloody 2 stroke in his avatar :)
(Sprint 1050 GT SE - currently).

Horrible things. Really horrible things to drive. Horrible reliability too.

Big petrol would be OK for me if gas prices halved (i.e. no more tax). Somehow I don't see this happening in this socialist utopia hole.

So diesel it is and it has some lovely low down torque :p

Let’s look at what will be banned next hybrids that don’t meet the mark. We will all be walking in the future. Maybe till they ban that too

I guess I think of cars differently to you and most people to me they are a tool to get me from a to b
it's motorcycles that I'm into so a small petrol car is perfect for me and the environment
As for reliability in all the years I've been driving I've only had to call out the AA twice once when I left my lights on and flattened the battery and once when the clutch cable broke on an old Renault that I had

And two stroke should be banned too, horrible smelly things :p

+1 on that. A faulty smoky diesel can be a nuisance to follow however one of these things stink up the air and cause terrible sound pollution for a mile behind.

With a few honourable exceptions like the Suzuki kettle and the Kwak 750 triple. We should probably leave the old Bantams and Fanny Bs alone too. Any moped with a 'spanny box should require the services of a proctologist to remove it from the rider's fundamental orifice though.

Can’t beat the sound of an L350 on full throttle :D
I think you need to be more specific. With no idea of what an L350 was, I googled it, first answers were for Epson printers.
Then I googled L350 engine and the anwers were 1964 Lamborghini, Daihatsu, Volvo and rotary machines, possibly farm vehicles.

It’s a Yamaha 350LC two stroke motorcycle:)
The one on my avatar they were made in the 1980s
Longlens was saying how much he hated the noise two stroke motorbikes make

Any Harley at tickover. My Speedmaster at tickover. Big Red at any revs. All beat the Elsie at full throttle. Hell, even the Enfield wins that battle!

Tho I do have allspeeds (exhausts) on mine :D
used to have full race pipes (Lomas ) amazing sound but to be honest they were too loud I changed them to the allspeeds

They're still stinkwheels!

Looking forward to the weekend - lots of decent sized 4 strokes, many using "R". (500 Club and VSCC hill climb at Wiscombe Park.)

Oooh, this could be exciting as I may be able to get along for at least one day..
Do you know much about it, like which day would you go if you could only go for one - any other tips ?

Depends on whether you're more into the little Coopers and a few bikes or a few Coopers and some proper old racing cars! Personally, if I was only going for one day, I'd go on the Sunday BUT it's more expensive. If I had the choice of either, I'd check the weather forecast and choose the driest day however, there looks to be little to choose between them as far as precipitation goes this year!

Other tips? Get there fairly early and catch a bit of the morning practice action on the long straight shortly after the start. As soon as the practice finishes, grab a burger/pork bap/insert food of choice (!) before the queues get too long (get Mrs Western or any companion to grab coffees while you get the food) and wander around the paddock area while all the cars etc. are there (great close ups). Before the afternoon action starts, head up through the woods to the hairpin before the straight just before the finish - decent panning shots through the trees, a good chance of a few low speed spins, you'll be VERY close to the cars as the head up the straight so you'll get a good fix of "R" and open pipe rort! (Earplugs might be a good idea...) Oh, and pray that the Napier Bentley is there - fabulous sight and the noise... :D:D:D

I'm probably going on both days since it's not too far away from home - look for a well padded gentleman in a rather disreputable Tilley hat held together (the hat, not me!) with a TP patch. I know there are a few people from here who sometimes turn up.

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain all I could ever need to know !
I shall be coming back from London on one of the days, so will see how things go, but should I get there, I will certainly look for a well padded gentleman - should a tall dark and handsome man approach you, it may not be me...

If it's today you make it (Saturday), I shall mostly be wearing a green (Swedish army surplus I think) coat. Weather now looking pretty good for both days.

Sadly it's looking unlikely that I'll be there at all as my few days work has grown a little, which is good in terms of the money, but a shame, as I was looking forward to meeting you..
Another time hopefully!
Hope you enjoy it and savour the R fumes.
