Mayfield Station, Manchester. A teeny bit of Urbex

Yes
We went on a laughingly titled photo shoot round this disused railway station. Unfortunately Herr Sturmahnfuhrer thought that anyone using more than a mobile phone was a trouble maker and constanly harried us to move along, mainly to listen to his prattle. Not what we expected.
We did manage to escape the shackles for a few minutes and here's a couple of shots from deep inside the bowels of the place.
@ChrisH would willingly have pushed his lordship through the burnt out stairwell in photo #2. Fortunately we found some concrete stairs as an alternative.
There must be lots more to see in there, but there are so many security guys permanently on site that even the urbex boys are going to struggle to get in.

A real shame. Like that first shot and must have been frustrating to have booked onto a "photo shoot" then not actually been allowed sufficient time and space to take photos.

Truly bizarre.

The whole set up is bizarre; his organisation/administration is a law unto itself.
He'd advertised two trips - one at 10.30 and another at noon. On Thursday he arbitrarily cancelled the 10.30 trip and told everyone to go at noon. I wasted a return train ticket. The trip wasn't full so we presume he was struggling for numbers.
Then when we got into the bowels he kept telling us off for taking our own pictures. We had to stay in a close group for "Insurance purposes" .
Next up he told us to wander where we wanted - no mention of Insurance Companies - which is when we found a passage leading to the interesting bits.
Then he reeled us all together to look at a presentation he projected from his mobile phone onto a dirty ceiling.

A different experience, but it only cost a tenner.

I don't get these photo guides, most just seem to be on an ego/money making trip:(

That's a shame, bloke sounds a right pain, pity a proper photographer didn't get the tour gig.
Potential is certainly there, just needs the right person to take advantage of it

I'm on one tomorrow at Peterborough cathedral, all day job and the guide is a photographer, so hoping it's going to be decent.
Reasonably priced 40 quid for 10 until 4 and includes tea and coffee too, we shall see.

Hi Rich. I guess the guy is mainly a tour guide who thinks that calling a trip a Photo Shoot attracts a wider clientele. There is massive potential though care would have to be taken so definitely not for the snowflakes or millenials.

There are trips round Liverpool Cathedral but I'd jib at paying to go unless they could guarantee access to parts that are otherwise out of reach. Also my conscience doesn't like the idea of pros and wannabees using the cathedral as a source of income without paying towards the upkeep of the place. It happens!!!

Can understand your views about the cathedral Frank, in fact I totally agree.
The one I'm going on is run by the cathedral, booked through their shop and presumably they make a few bob from it.
Also gives access to out of bounds areas such as the upper floor and roof, also includes the library.
Its not only a photo tour, also includes talk on the architecture and history of the building, looking forward to it.

Now that would interest me. I've talked my way into one of two "secret" places but I always make my donation before asking. There was a keen tog who was a volunteer warden down there. He would help me out, but he's retired now through ill health.
I don't mind paying a few shekels to the owners of the place. I object to paying wannabees trying to make money on the back of someone else's expenditure. Some surprisingly big names* do it and see it as their right!!

* Names you will know!

Not cool, ponces in all walks of life, another of my pet hates is over the top commercialism.
Cheddar Gorge is very tacky these days, another bad example is Eden Camp, both have gawdy bright signs everywhere.
Went to one of those cold war bunkers that was like that too, also charged extra to take photos.

Not been to Eden. Looks good but over commercialised and aimed at kids and the adults who bring them. ....and money.

Well that was a great day at the cathedral, access all areas and lots of information about its history.
Will get some photos sorted out, photo guide was paid, but the other three guide/ historians were church volunteers.

They are talking about doing another one later in the year, can definitely recommend it to anyone interested in this sort of thing

I had a look at getting to Peterborough but the logistics for a 10AM start are horrendous from up here.
I did check Liverpool Cathedral but the only tour they organise themselves is one up the main tower and into the main bell chamber.
I've done that and whilst it was very interesting it wasn't very photogenic.
They do organised tours but for trippers, not togs.
The rip off photo shoot merchants don't go anywhere that Joe Public can't wander to on his own. Shucks.
