Yes
I have a laptop that i do all my editing on but the screen is not great for printing images ,My brother has a 17"Dell that a few years old flat screen that iI am going to borrow so if I can calibrate it when I go to print images how do I select the Dell for the printer to pick the right colours?

Your Monitor profile has little to do with printing apart from when you are soft proofing your printer profile when a calibrated monitor is essential...

If you have calibrated the Dell Monitor (a 17" sounds pretty old so may not calibrate/profile well) and are using it as your primary editing monitor there is no need for it to be selected for anything to do with printing.

You need your screen calibrated and to have the correct brightness set WIthout this your prints will not look like what you have edited on screen. when your plugging in the screen your laptop will be set for it and when running your calibration with whatever tool you use it will be set for that screen when its plugged in.
