Should I have done anything differently..?
I struggled with some as I had to shoot direct into the sun, hence the F25 and Iso50.. So the sky is all blown out.. But other than that..?

Firstly I'm rubbish at panning so ignored me if you wish. I always check for sharpness by signage. I had a close look at the yellow one on my tablet and that seems to go off towards the back but I don't know if thats exceptable, maybe someone could tell me?? You've got spoke blurr so that's good which I find hard on cars cos they're so slow compared to bikes, but I think some of the backgrounds could do with being blurrier. Also to give a sense of speed its better to have more space in front of the subject than behind.

I had a similar problem with light when I last shot racing which was the bikes at thruxton so I feel your pain with that, I'm thinking of getting a couple of screw on NDs for my 150-500 to help.

The ones that are side on certainly come across better technically than those at ¾ shot, as there is too much movement in those. I rather like the yellow one, but feel that your placement of the car in the frame is very slightly premature, almost like you are consciously trying to leave space for the car to go into. Maybe crop the area at the front of the car ever so slightly.

I also like the b/w (Ford Escort? No.12) but it seems slightly lost and not critically sharp. The sky and background blur are great; I would also lose the blurred object it is heading towards, by cropping or cloning.

If the advertising on the car is slightly out, then I would discount the shot.

Wheel blur definitely, background blur absolutely, but the car itself needs to be pin sharp, hence the reason why the side on shots at slow shutter speeds need very accomplished panning technique .

With this shot, levelling it along the white track line seemed to create the most visually pleasing rendition as the horizon is not uniform anyway. View attachment 31462

Sorry guys, i didnt get notifications on these..!

Thankyou for all the positives and negatives :)

Thanks Mike, im thinking NDs could be the next step for me next time, especially for that blasted sun..!

Excellent again, thankyou Shreds. I like to try and edit my shots to personal preference (obviously) but im always excited to see others, that yellow one looks far better with the track lined up rarther than the off horizon, also the crop works better.

When I set out, with the cars coming slightly towards me (theres not much room there) i thought to get the numberplate spot on rather then the back of the car.. I thought it worked better and i am quite please with them pictures, but i get your point about the side ons.

Ive got a few dates lined up for track days, so i hopefully get more chance to get some practice in, using these comments.

Thanks again.

Ben,

I feel your pain. I used to shoot forest rallies and the like, often in appalling weather and little chance to do anything other than shoot head on. Wide open apertures in heavily wooded areas used to leave little depth of field to cope with the rear of the car, and that was in film days when 400 ISO was the norm. Learnt a lot in those years. Often the best shots used to come from the pits/start/finish unfortunately.

Oulton Park and Donnington were the main tracks I used to cover, which was easier as they were not darkened by woodland, but we used to have some fun!

Keep up the shooting!

Thanks Ian, I was hoping to break out the EF-M for the next one haha, Just put my first roll for processing to make sure it's fine and I'm going to get some decent film.

I've got a forest rally and off road event coming up.. so I might get time for it.

Thanks again :)
