No specialist gear just a manfrotto tripod - Nikon D300 camera and one of those cheap manual super telephoto lens ( Opteka 650- 1300 mm f8-16) with a doubler on the end giving me 2600mm. Fully extended that lens did not stay rigid and a slight movement in the middle joints
Then I hit problems big time . Not only in the pitch dark, where we used to live, but getting the lens to focus. hang on a minute that is not all, being this because the moon is moving very quickly so I had to guess its path and catch it as it entered frame.
To top it all it was a very very cold winters night around midnight and freeing to death. Not to attempt ever again.

I think it can be tricky at 600mm letalone the focal lengths you're imaging with. Have you tried shooting at lower FL's ?
600mm isn't difficult. I got some good shots with my sigma 150-600mm a couple of years back.
