It looks predated and abandoned, the parent birds would normally remove the egg shell once the chick has hatched.
so you are bang on!!
before i bought this house 5 years ago it was there and prior to that the loft space had been topped up with insulation and a new boiler flue...which goes up through the roof space...was fitted..
so you are right..
