A very pleasant dude has been at the marsh today since
midday and saw them for the first time there. It was a
premiere for me as well so I took the pair — not too diff-
cult as they're hardly more than 30 cm apart at any time!

…but I can't make out what they are, got and idea?

Some kind of Mallard hybrid?

The blue diamond is not on the wings
the beak is orange and not yellow
the beak base is convex and not concave
the tail does not show the two hooked feathers etc…

not really I think!

They are not a wild european species. which means they are probably hybrids rather then a wild species from somewhere else in the world (162 species to choose from) Although they don't have any of the normal mallard characteristics there is still a 90% chance they are mallard hybrids due to the extensive cross breeding which has taken place in the past.

You may be right there, couldn't find anything close in
the bible — btw, it's about 150+ % larger than a Mallard!

Mallards do cross breed with Geese, I believe

[EDIT - incorrect - apparently it is impossible for a Mallard and a Goose to produce offspring, according to the internet ..... because of the different number of chromosones in each]

Many of the mallard crosses are more than twice the size of the wild mallard - extra size has been bred into the hybrids for obvious reasons over the last couple of hundred years!
