Nikon D750 & D780

We have some Xmas lights up but the tree not going up till Saturday. But with a poorly 10 month old daughter don't think there will be many festive shots this weekend

2 from a very cold morning on the snow covered beach here in Oulu, Finland. Maybe just cropped but no other PP on them. GRE_3150~2.JPGGRE_3139~2.JPG

I do too, but for those scenarios where you get one shot but the moment passes, you could have blown highlights.

Lovely image.

How do you find it works on portraits? I'm second shooting weddings recently, so wonder how it'd work throughout the day to prevent those clipped highlights.

Personally I’d dial in -2 exposure comp on an image like that and go from there. Far quicker in practice out in the field at say a wedding than faffing with metering settings. But if you’re not rushed, then it does work well.

I do, but other than shooting the same decorations I've shot several times before there's not really much for me to take pics of ;) I'm sure something will grab my attention sooner rather than later (y)

I’m a bit like that at the moment. Hopefully go for a wander before xmas, but the weekends are looking busy with socialising [emoji3]

Nice, I like the colour and composition on #1
Thanks, I purposely wanted the 3 changing cabins in shot with the life savers lookout hut in the background thus linking the subjects.

Wouldn’t get out of bed for that [emoji3]

Joking aside, it’s a great gig for someone with no ties. I’ll see if the missus wants a break later [emoji23]

Anyone else's misses insistent on watching as you edit pictures of the kids (or family).

Did a few shots yesterday for some family christmas presents. Went upstairs and wanted to do some editing, she decides to come to bed too, then see's what i'm doing.... "oh you're editing pictures"... then decides to sit next to me commenting on everything i'm doing.

So i was finishing an edit and noticed the white balance was off slightly, so sampled off someones white of the eye, which sent it to a red cast just to get an immediate reaction "OH I'M NOT KEEN O N THAT FILTER"... they are not f***ing filters, and obviously i'm not going to leave it looking like everyone has just been sat on the sun for the last 3 days.

My mrs is good as gold, she knows where the room divider is [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23]

I do them, she then critiques before she uploads to Facebook

Mine doesn't actually criticise my editing, it's everything else she criticise's

I have to show the pictures first then show the edits. Then the cull before I upload to Facebook. If I want to upload to Flickr and post on here. Then that's a whole new cull

I just get moaned at for spending too long on the computer ;)

The best thing I ever did was sit down and edit some holiday photographs with my wife. She’d taken them and wanted to go through the editing process with me. She saw what went into it and hasn’t made any comments about me spending too much time on the computer anymore :D I tend to have presets for a lot of things now that speeds things up exponentially so I don’t spend as much time in front of the computer these days anyway!

I think half my trouble is I can't get to grips with lightroom. And do all my work in ps

Ahhhh that might slow you down then! If you aren’t already you can speed things up in actions though, and if you need to do a full folder of the same adjustments you can just batch it through automatically. I tend to do this for sharpening and saving for web sizes :)

Which method are you using? I’ve always just used High Pass but I’m fully aware there are others too, high pass has always just worked nicely for me, just have 3/4 actions set up with different percentages set up :)

I have an action for web sizing and sharpening. For printing large, I’ll do that manually in PS and do use a combination of high pass and smart sharpening. Tend to use high pass for selective sharpening if there’s something specific needing it, but very rare.

I don’t find the need for anything more than USM for web output. As part of the initial RAW processing there’s some LR sharpening but for web images I’ll create a folder of full JPEG’s then run that through the automate process in PS.

I did try mogrify but I couldn’t get the images to look as good as the USM sharpening in PS.

You need to buy yourself the latest Scott Kelby book on LR. In valuable to begin with. What do you struggle with?
It's really only the initial bit. The cataloguing etc. The controls and that I can cope with. I like the idea more of all the presets in lr.
I may try again over the Xmas break

I actually transfer my files to my computer first and put them in folders (which are themselves in year folders), then when I import into LR they're all catalogued the same as they are on my computer. It might not be the quickest way, but it's the way I've always done it and it's just habit now.

I import into LR the whole lot. Year/month folders and date_event into a DNG folder. Flag the keepers; then select the unflagged (enable filter and unflagged) and delete them. Rename the lot and start editing.

For any output files, just create a sub folder, usually ‘web’ and that’s it. If I’m really good when all’s done, I’ll add keywords for people etc and any relevance. For events etc I’ll create and add a collection of the best.

It’s never a good idea messing around with folders outside of LR as you’ll need to redirect LR. Moving folders/files around is best done from LR.

I don't need to redirect LR, I import from the folders on my computer and LR lists the albums as they are on my computer, and next time I click import it takes me straight to the parent folder. The only folders I create in LR are the year ones, which creates a 'parent' folder on my hard drive to which I add all other folders. As you can see from the screen shot, I have year parent folders and then all the 'shoots' from that year as subfolders, and this mirrors my folder structure on my computer (y) I export to either a web folder or full res folder.

I completely understand your system Toby and makes sense, my comments regarding folder arrangement was more for Marks benefit. If you don’t know the LR system it’s easy to fall foul of moving folders around outside of LR and then LR will lose them.
