Nikon D750 & D780

I have the 24-120 VR lens and it is a great walkabout lens, the 24-70 is a bit of a beast.

By beast, I take it it's heavy? Leaning towards the 24-120 i think.[/QUOTE]
YUP It is heavy, actually heavier than the camera itself, but built like a tank :)

The 24-120 is about a couple of hundred grammes lighter and has the advantage of VR as well.

The 24-85 is about half the weight of the 24-70.:D

But if someone want just one lens to go with a D750 the 24-120 makes a lot of sense. (y)

Thanks, 24-120 looks good. But wandering if the 24-70 f2.8 and a 70-200 f4 would cover all bases. Weight isn't to much of an issue to me to be honest.

24-70mm is a better lens than the 24-120mm, but they are kind of aimed at different markets. Any reason why you'd choose the f4 version of the 70-200mm over the f2.8?

I have had both the 70-200's. It was my least used lens, and the weight difference is significant, add to that the extra expense of it sitting at home a lot it made sense to go down the f4 route. Plus that has VR and the 24-70 doesn't.

Still new to photography so shooting everything and anything when out walking dog and at work, no specific f stops used, just try all and see what works and what doesnt.I'm doing the 'a year with my camera' course so learning loads. i Like landscapes , macro (will get a specific lens for this at some point) and astrophotography.

Tough one really. For most of what you need the 24-120 f4 would be perfect, but astro photography you'll need faster than F4.

If you want a one lens option, go for the 24-70 2.8, a used one is about £600-£650.

What I would do in your position is buy the 24-120 f4 used for £350-£400 and then buy a second faster prime lens for astro. Maybe the Samyang 14mm 2.8, or Nikon 20mm 2.8

That makes sense for you yes, the 70-200mm is one of my most used lenses (y)

Not sure why you used reference to the 24-70mm not having VR though when you're comparing 70-200's?

I have a samyang 14mm 2.8 that wasn't in the bag that got nicked with my d5600 so covered for the Astro :)
Just can't decide between the 24-70 or 24-120

James, if you live in my neck of the woods we could meet up and you could try the 24-120 i have, its a cracking lens and with the VR the constant f4 is very useable even at high ISO.

I recently bought a 24-70 and agree it is heavy but do live the picture that I get from it.

Don't discount the 3rd party 24-70 f2.8 options either, the original Tamron 24-70 f2.8 is slightly smaller and lighter than the Nikon but also has VR - it was almost always on my D750/D800 when I was a Nikon user, its also fairly cheap used - potentially as low as £400.

I found the Sigma 24-105 f4 a much better lens than the nikon 24-120 f4, sharper, brighter and cleaner images, a bit less reach and a bit chunkier and more weight, but you get a really solid all metal build, and I think it looks better on the camera. The extended length of the nikon makes it look and feel cheap and toy like imo.

So, bought a d750 with 24-120 after a lot of research. Delivered today, had a quick play in the garden tonight when I got home from work. Impressed so far. Can't wait to get out and have a proper go with it.
Enjoy and post some shots.

Body number two froze and threw the dreaded Err message at me today. Got it going and it lasted the day but time to send it off on the recall.

Well I'm blowed. Nikon received my D750 on the 22nd and it's due back tomorrow. I'd no plans to take photos this weekend. I'll have to make some now!

In the meantime here's one from yesterday with body no. 1.

Thank you.
I'm clueless when it comes to doing landscapes it's the 1st one I've done and been happy with
It`s very good for a 1st, only crit, it`s a little dark on the rhs but that`s nothing to worry about.

Got myself a 35mm/f1.8 a while back. It's a great match for BIF with the D750. :D

Bringing this thread back from the basement... Went to the big city on the weekend looking for sunset opportunities, of course I was in the wrong place at the wrong time but managed to get this while on the way to a restaurant for supper.

Paul some nice colours captured.
