Nikon Z* mirrorless

Amazon... they had one left on Prime for £100 less than the cheapest of the mainstream UK dealers, although I see on CPB that their price is now back up to the same as the rest.

Just reading up on this, and see the cards are XQD. A quick look seems to see them priced at £130 for a 32GB! Is that right? or is there an alternative?
XQD cards are crazy expansive, BUT if you compare them to equivalent speed SD cards then the SD cards are equally crazy expensive. I bought one of the slower 128gb Sony M series (440mb/s read 150mb/s write) for around £130 last year from Photospecialist. Unfortunately they only have the uber expensive G series on their site at the mo)
PROAV seem to have Sony 32Gb XQD cards for £78... that's just with a quick look, better offers may be out there. Also, CFExpress will be compatible at some point.

I was pleasantly surprised to have a 64Gb Sony XQD card bundled in with my Z6/24-70/FTZ kit too... I didn't realise they were including that.
I would have though CFExpress are equally as expensive on launch tbh.

I've just discovered that the FTZ adapter won't fit on the Z6 with my tripod quick release plate fitted... sigh

There’s a video on YouTube complaining about that. Can’t remember who posted it though

Well, I decided in the end I had to take the plunge. Only really had a day to test and compare to my Fuji (X-Pro2). The thing that most impresses me is just how well everything's designed --in particular the location of the buttons and dials. As almost everything is configurable, it becomes remarkably easy to use. Add a really good viewfinder and IBIS (around 3-4 stops it looks like) and I really can't find anything so far of significance to fault. As I seldom do AF tracking, I'm not greatly bothered how that does but am looking forward to having decent video for amateur short clips.

IQ compared to the FUJI? Around a stop better at high ISO as expected -- possibly slightly more as Fuji usually requires 2/3 stop more light for the same settings. The 24-70 is crazy sharp. With Capture One, I somewhat prefer the rendering and colours but you often need to use extra shadow to produce a more natural effect in landscape. Much more testing required but it's currently looking better than 50/50 that I'll eventually transition back to Nikon.

The just announced 14-30? Probably excellent but likely unaffordable short-term. Telezoom most important for system building and a 70-200 f2.8 is out of the question so for short to medium term, the choice seems to be 70-200 f4 or relatively cheap AF-P 70-300. Anyone tried both by any chance?

And people are complaining there's only one card slot! Tsk ;)

What are people using for a wide prime lens, if any? I'd want something around 24-27mm f1.4. Is there a Sigma/Nikon equivalent that can be used with the adapter without losing AF or IQ?

How about Sigma 24mm ART

Everything Z6/Z7 is crazy expensive! Priced me well out of the system TBH!

Maybe is the likes of Samyang etc start making some lenses it might be more appealing but the price of these 1.8 and f4 lenses are too much for me.

I hate to think what the 70-200 will cost.

In a way I hope the D760 rumors are true.

Nikon 24mm f/1.4
Nikon 28mm f/1.4
Sigma 24mm f/1.4

I'm sure Nikon said at the outset that they will bring out more consumer-orientated lens lines, not just the pricey pro-level S. It's going to take a while though. I very nearly decided not to try out the Z6 at this stage because I'm not entirely sure what I'm buying into. But for those who are already committed to mirrorless with its various advantages and already have either fully compatible modern AF-S or AF-P lenses or a bunch of old MF ones, it makes some sense to take the plunge now. If a D760 sees the light of day, I doubt it'll be that much cheaper than the Z6 and you can easily use your F mount f1.8 35,50,85 or whatever on the new camera. For a telephoto, the light and (relatively) inexpensive AF-P 70-300 might well be good enough, if not there's the 70-200 f4 until affordable stuff for the new mount sees the light of day!

Thing is Justin. Us early adopters recognise that we’re paying for the privilege. I’d expect prices to fall given time.
I’ve not had any opportunity to try the AF-C yet. Something that’ll impact your decision no doubt.

wonder how a hard Brexit might affect the price of Photo equipment (including Grey imports from Chain / Hong Kong). Just wondering if sooner or later might be the time to spring for a Z6 if I'm really decided on getting one ?

wait until Tuesday. If May can't get her deal through Parliament and the pound crashes yet further, you have your answer. Or perhaps I mean don't wait until Tuesday :) For people like me who currently live in the EU but have most income in GBP, it's not much fun at the moment.

You lot are a very bad influence.

Just ordered the Z6 with FTZ adapter and 24-70 kit, spare battery and 200gb Sony XQD card from Panamoz. So much for a light spend January. :hungover:

Right, so typically with all my systems (Micro Four Thirds, Fuji, Nikon APS-C), I usually start with 4 lenses and that tends to do me for a good while. They being a standard zoom (got that covered with the 24-70), an UWA (typically something in the 15-30 ish range), a medium telephoto (70-200 ish) and a standard prime (say a 50mm F1.8).

The newly announced Nikon 14-30 F4 looks like it could fill no 1, but at nearly £1.5k, I doubt I'll be able to afford that in the near future (although It would be on wish list) Any other contenders (willing to consider Sigma / Tamron so long as they AF on the Z series).

For the medium telephoto, it looks like only a F2.8 70-200 is on the immediate cards, and if the current 70-200 F2.8 V11 pricing is nything to go by, this will also be out of my price bracket. So I was thinking about the Nikon 70-200 F4 - any thoughts or other recommendations ?

For the standard prime, whilst the 50mm S lens is an obvious choice, it's not cheap, and I can get a used 50mm F1.4 AFS a lot cheaper. Any thoughts on that as well please ?

Going to the Nikon school on Saturday to have a play around with a Z6. Can't find one in any of the local shops near me.

@Sootchucker

How about the 18-35 g
With you on the 70-200 although never tried the f4
Lots of 50mm prime options out there, receiving my 50mm z mount tomorrow (as long as I’m home for the postie). Hoping to use it Saturday when visiting youngest Granddaughter. I’ll let you know how it goes.

70-300 AF-P (FX) is another option.

http://www.dslrbodies.com/lenses/ni...-lens-reviews/nikon-70-300mm-f45-56-af-p.html

I have a 50mm 1.4 AF-S up for sale if you want to go that route. It's not a focal length I use much. I'm more 35/85.
I have the AF-P 70-300mm and whilst it's a very good lens for the money I paid during the cash back deal, it has got the worst vignetting I have ever seen. I's blatantly obvious in the viewfinder let alone reviewing the image afterwards. Obviously it's a easy fix in post, but it's just surprising that a modern lens can be that bad, especially when the predecessor didn't really suffer at all.

Yes Thom Hogan also highlights that in his review.
Agree that for the price it is very good.

I've just discovered that the FTZ adapter won't fit on the Z6 with my tripod quick release plate fitted... sigh

I retract my earlier criticism, I've only just realised that you can fit the release plate to the FTZ adapter itself... DOH! Still a bit of a faff to change between Z lenses and F lenses while using a tripod though. I've ordered the 3 legged thing L-Bracket which should be easier.

Is that the new Zelda ?

No Nikon stuff listed on the Panamoz site at present.

That’s saved me a ton of money, was potentially looking at the Z6.

That’s a shame. Got mine just in time.

What’s going on there then? Any idea why they have pulled ALL their Nikon stuff?!

Very odd, I hope they honour warranty on Nikon stuff purchased prior to this.

Didn’t HDEW do the same a while ago ?

Yeah, sounds like you did! Haven’t read about it anywhere, so must be in the last day or so they’ve pulled everything from their website.

Probably still got stock. Email them.
