Nikon Z* mirrorless

Nice pictures, how are you finding the 50? It's either that or the 35 next for me.
It’s the ‘old’ AF-S 50mm f1.8G. I’ve always liked the rendering but it’s not the sharpest. Great value at circa £100 used when I got it.
The orange escort is my pick. Nice set!
Thanks. I love the Mk1 escorts.

How's the af with that 50mm?
Seems as good as it was on the D750 and D850, but then it was only static subjects. I did use it to take pics of a friend's newborn the other week though and again it seemed perfectly snappy.

So DXO have now scored the Z 35mm and results are pretty impressive, however after seeing their assessment of the 24-70mm f4 I'm not sure I can trust them anymore. Mind you for the price of the 35mm I'd want it to be stellar, yet it still isn't as sharp as the 50mm (according to DXO). I've never understood why 35mm's tend to be more than 50mm lenses though

I’ve got it. It’s fabulous.
I know it’s possible to measure sharpness, but put pictures from these two side by side..I couldn’t see one being better than the other.

I've ordered one yesterday from Amazon, as new for £550 which makes it a bit easier to justify if you need one less excuse :)

That's quite a saving. It's still a shame that the new primes are pricey though, hopefully they'll bring out some cheaper alternatives in the future. I'd love a native 50mm but I can't justify the cost, especially when I've got the AF-S 50mm f1.8G that works perfectly OK on the Z.

Funnily, I was looking at the 35 at Amazon yesterday. Slightly cheaper if you order from Amazon Germany.

Thanks for the heads up, just checked the 50mm and it's EURO 399 vs £399 on amazon UK. If you have prime do you still get free delivery if ordering from one of the EU amazons?

those who are looking for the 50mm f1.8, don't forget that in Germany (and maybe the rest of the eurozone), there is a €200 cashback instead of the UK £90 so you can get a new one for little over £300. 35mm prices seem slightly cheaper but the cashback is the same equivalent. The 35mm is likely to be my next and hopefully final purchase until the Z lenses are fully rounded out but I'm waiting a bit to see if the price goes lower.

Reputable stores like Calumet/Wex in Germany sell the 50mm for €349-€359. Amazon is clearly overpriced on this occasion. Amazon charge a little for overseas delivery - around £4 typically. Living in Germany, I actually use Amazon UK a bit more than Amazon.de though ideally I try to buy locally where possible. Amazon.uk have a Bavarian depot anyway so they often don't need to import in the first place.

I didn't realise WEX and calumet had German stores, that's worth knowing thanks.

Having sold my Fuji X100F kit, I’ve just ordered the 35mm from Amazon; damaged box but lens as-new, for £572. Should be here on Sunday.

Stonking lens. You’ll love it..

So nearly bought your X100..

I think I'm one of only a few that prefer the 50mm focal length, but by the looks of things both the 35mm and 50mm are superb lenses. I'm tempted to buy the 50mm from Germany, but I have to say I'm happy with the 50mm f1.8G on the Z7 so not sure I can justify the extra cost.

hmmmm -- do you happen to know if Amazon's warehouse stuff, esp. technically used (another one on offer) -- has a proper warranty? Getting close to my £500 target

Yes, it gets the full Amazon 12 months warranty. Despite all their faults, I’ve found Amazon customer service to be generally excellent.

that what I've feared --must keep my itchy fingers in check, especially as I've just bought something else (more later ;))

that something in question is the Irix 15mm f2.4. It's a cracker -- both a better lens than the Samyang 14mm f2.8 and a better copy (not so surprising as it's not a second hand reject). For anyone wanting a quality UWA at under a third of the price of the 14-30 and doesn't need a zoom, this is it. Back goes the Samyang.

And my 35mm arrived from Amazon Warehouse today. Despite the description both the box and the lens are immaculate. It came with an invitation to register it on Nikon.de for a 5 year warranty.
Cool (y)

Ok, have sold both of my DSLR's now so going to order a Z6 and FTZ adapter from efinity this week. I was going to get an XQD card from there too, either 64gb or 120gb not sure yet as funds are tight.

Just wondering if there is anywhere that does these cheaper that i havent heard of?
Also, can anyone recommend a XQD card reader, as again i don't want to spend more than necessary, and the prices between brands varies a lot, is there any difference between one that cost £18 and Sonys one that is nearly £40?

Thanks

the bastards just put the price up of both yours and the Used --Very Good. My purchase timing with things Z6 seems to be very bad....

I use the Sony card reader as it was the only one easily available when I bought, and I thought it made senses to use one from the manufacturer of the cards. To date I haven't found any deals on memory cards - my advice is to get one from E-Infin or, in my case, Panamoz as they are generally cheaper than retail.

XQD cards are expensive from everywhere tbh. I know that Panamoz do sell them cheaper when you buy gear from them, not sure if e-infinty is the same? Every now and again you find one cheaper than anywhere else, but you have tom be quick as the price soon goes up again.

The Sony card reader is expensive but is very good, speed of transfer is incredibly fast (obviously that's down to the card as well)

e-infinity prices for XQD cards are pretty competitive. Certainly cheaper now than when I bought mine a few months ago.

Can you buy them separately from them? IE, without a camera?

EDIT just checked and it seems like you can. Still not a cheap item, though.

Z6 is great. Not sure what lenses you have but the kit 24-70 is fabulous and great value when bought as part of a kit.

What he said :plus1:

Thanks, i was really happy with my D750 but had an itch, and i've never had a new body in 10 years of photography, so thought with mirroless etc now is the time. I could well regret it but im thinking i won't.
I'm a prime sort of person, and have the Sigma Art 35 and 50 along with a Nikon 85 1.8G. The only zoom i have is a 70-200 2.8 VRII. I am debating selling my Sigmas for the Z mount equivalents as theres not much in price between them. Not bothered about them being 1.8 either. I think i'll see how the Sigmas perform first though.

The Z's are great cameras, and overall I think better than the D750. The only thing you might find is that frame rate is slightly less (if you want real time view) and blackout is longer making it more tricky for burst shooting/panning. For everything else the Z's are a winner (y)

I bought a 64Gb card at the end of Feb having shopped around (including e-infinity) £152. Now down to £110 for the same card. I guess they are moving in the right direction but how much lower remains to be seen.
