Nikon Z* mirrorless

Still using SD cards here as I haven't yet joined the mirrorless revolution!

I've always taken mine out too, but in the last few months I've had the plastic break between the contacts on the front edge of two cards. I don't know whether it's because of repeated removal and reinsertion or because of faulty cards or ham-fistedness.
In both cases the camera has refused to recognise the card - in fact it won't seat in the slot, it bounces back when I push it in rather than stay fully in. I still haven't retrieved a small piece that must still be in the card slot, and as a result, the camera isn't accepting a card in slot 1 either. Good job the D7200 has got an extra slot.

Not trying to start that debate up again! I must stress I haven't lost any shots because of the issue.

Are XQD cards more robust, physically, than SDs?
Certainly they're physically larger, thicker, and with protected contacts. A bit like a posh CF card, in fact! SD cards do feel like they could more easily break, but I've been using memory cards since the late '90s with no problems.

I prefer XQD, SD have always felt a bit flimsy, especially the thin ‘teeth’

Sorry, couldn’t help it ;)

What is it that you don’t like about Fuji/APS-C?

Actually don’t have a dislike for Fuji/APS-C
Can’t help thinking how much more I’d like my shallow depth of field shots if they were shot on full frame or larger. And NO I can’t afford Medium Format.
Changing systems yet again won’t improve my pictures.
But sometimes for me that’s not the only goal. Using gear I enjoy is a big part of it.

Sorry, I should have worded it better and should have said what makes you not like Fuji/APS-C as much as FF. I'm like you though, I like the shallow DOF FF offers.

Enjoying the gear is a huge part as you say (y)

Exactly the same for me Trev... that’s why I keep poking my head here and retreating again quickly before proper GAS sets in :ROFLMAO:

I usually wouldn't post one after the other, but really like this shot of my dog...maybe a bit more room around it (it's a full frame), but it somehow jumps out for me.

It's a bit expensive, with the questionable 24-50 zoom, isn't it? Granted, Z6 kit prices have gone back up, but you could get a Z6 and 24-70 for about what the Z5 kit is going for. And other than the top plate LCD, what's the difference?

Enough to put me off from getting one at the moment but will wait and see what it like in real world tests

Ah; so it's got lower video capability (4k in a crop mode only, no fancy output feature), slightly different sensor, no top plate LCD, lower fups, lower res rear screen. Those are the things I can see that stand out. But those wouldn't put my off buying it; I'm not a video person. What would put me off, is the price. About £1300 tops, with the 24-70, then I'd say yes (if I didn't already have a Z6). But at £1700+ with a limited kit zoom, definitely not. I expect prices will drop quite quickly, but still. The Z6, even at current prices, still remains better VFM, for me.

Wonder why the Z6S will be heavier?
It's going to have two Cfexpress slots (maybe one Cfexpress and one SD) and connections for a battery grip, which will make it bigger and, I have made the assumption this also means heavier.

This is the biggest negative point about the Z6, for me. I think my next Nikon cam will be a Z8/9 or whatever the equivalent to say a D8xx model is. Probs not a D6 type pro beast though, that's not so much my thing.

Yes, it’s a negative for me too, but I wait to see what the Z6s and Z7s brings us, before assuming I need to jump to a Z8/Z9, but I'm in no great rush to go "Z".

One of the interesting pluses of the Z5 is the unlimited buffer as long as you are using UHS-II cards, which looks good for a the new Z6/Z7 bodies.

Oh I'm not looking back. Z all the way for me, from now on. Like Garlic Bread; it's the future.

I don't disagree, but for me it offers no "must have" features amongst all the "would be nice to have" features that it does offer. So, happy to wait until the right camera comes along.

For me, the 'must have' features are the improved low light performance (over my D600, which is already pretty good), the improved AF, Eye EF, and already, the fantastic Z lens quality. The EVF is a real boon in very low light, with its WISIWYG function, and the smaller size suits me. A lot of 'advantages' over an F-mount DSLR, for me and the type of pics I want to shoot.

Fair enough, but as I don't like buying new cameras, I will just need to wait until the right camera comes along that makes me feel I must upgrade.

No I totally understand that. I've always wanted a smaller, lighter cam ever since I got 'properly' into digital photography, with my D200. I love my D600 with the grip, it's so nice to use especially with bigger lenses. But it is big and bulky and heavy. And not such fun to travel with. So that's why I bought a D3300, and used it with a 16-85mm zoom. A great little cam, but a bit lacking in certain ways, particularly low light capability, and ultimate IQ. When the Z cams were launched, I now had an option for a smaller, lighter, yet still capable FX cam, that offered improvements all round, over my other cams. Hardly any bigger than my D3300, yet far more capable, and with significantly better IQ. I loved my Z6 as soon as I got it; it's an amazing cam. I feel it has helped me improve my photography, by being a tool better suited to my needs.

Had I waited for the 'perfect' cam, I may still be waiting a while. And I'd have missed out on owning an using my Z6, and enjoying the pics it's helped me take. A bird in the hand...

Well, I also have an Olympus EM5.II with a 12-40 f2.8 and a Fuji X100s which fill specific niches for me.

But, don't confuse me waiting for the "right" Nikon camera to come along with me waiting for the "perfect" Nikon camera to come along.

At the moment, for the things I do, neither the Z6 nor Z7 offer me enough incentive to upgrade from my D600 and D500 cameras. Strangely, with the dual SD cards of the Z5, I find it more appealing as a D600 replacement than either the Z6 or Z7. But I will be holding out to see what the Z6s offers when it comes.

Shame they haven’t announced any long lenses to use with the telconvertors.
I know the 70-200 2.8 is due but 200mm ain’t that long.

I understand that. TBH I didn't actually feel my D600 needed 'upgrading'; sure, there had been newer, improved cams come along, but none I considered worth parting with loads of money for. I just couldn't justify the expense. The Z6 was actually the 'replacement' for the D3300! The fact it is better, in many respects, than my D600, is just how it is. But then; I used both to shoot gigs (24-70 and 70-200 combo), and they compliment each other nicely. The D600 is better to handle with the bigger lens. I recently used my D600 to copy some old negs; the much better battery life meant I could shoot loads more without needing to change/charge the batteries. I still got through 2 EL-EN15s though, in a day's shooting. The Z6 would have used them up much quicker. Horses for courses.

What will you do if the Z6s doesn't offer what you want from a cam?

What will you do if the Z6s doesn't offer what you want from a cam?

Just carry on with what I've got :)

I don't feel anything is especially lacking from my D600. I would like a tilty screen and mirrorless are better for manual focussing (most of my lenses are manual focus), but neither is a big issue for me, which is where we started, there are things I would like, but nothing I feel sufficiently "must have" to drive me into an upgrade.

But, at the moment, the single card slot on the Z6/Z, some limitations on AF/FPS/viewfinder blackout for wildlife, and the lack of a battery grip, are the main reasons I have not gone down the Z6/Z7 route. These should be fixed on the Z6s/Z7s, so it will no longer be specific features that prevent me upgrading, just whether the minor benefits over what I already have, warrant the expense.

Just read the updates present in the new firmware

-Added support for F mount lens firmware updates. F mount lens firmware updates are supported from FTZ mount adapter firmware version 1.10.

What does this mean? Didn't know nikkor lenses could get a firmware upgrade, nor the ftz adapter

Whilst it’s fair to say that the new Z5 is lacking the features of the Z6 it’s also fair to say the Z6 is lacking features from the Z5 and if push came to shove I’d say for stills the Z5 is the more professional product. Twin card slots alone raise the Z5 above the Z6 imo.

Shows how different we can be as photographers, the shallow DOF thing has never really done much for me. What I like about FF is cleaner files at high ISO, I do like that 'FF look' at times but it would be more novelty in my case.

The Z5 actually looks like my ideal camera, but it needs to be as affordable as they make out in their promo - hailing it as the most affordable FF ML yet [I assume they mean with IBIS as the RP is a hell of a lot cheaper], but seems it's not is it? They're comparing to release prices of the 'higher end' models, but a new Z6 can be had now for less Grey. Surely when the Z5 lands on the same sites it'll have to be a chunk less or it's going to look a bit strange. The Z6 supposedly being higher spec. And enough with adding on these crappy collapsable kit lenses ... who wants 50mm 6.3? I'd rather use any old F mount prime

The Nikon FT1 adaptor (to allow Nikon F lenses to work on the Nikon 1 cameras) had several firmware upgrades during its lifetime, so it seems reasonable that the FTZ offers the same facility.

I can't answer your other question, but I'm guessing that the F-mount more specialist super telephotos will be a long time coming for the Z mount, and that Nikon anticipated this by including a firmware upgrade option in the more recent lens releases.

For example, the F-mount 120-300mm f2.8, is meant to perform better than the existing f -mount 300mm f2.8 and It's hard to think that a Z -mount version of this would be any smaller/lighter or offer better performance than this lens with an FTZ.

Well the £439 price tag has helped me make up my mind on that one...

Joke that is! I doubt it'll stay that price for long, same with the Z5 at it's suggested price. Other manufacturers can do similar lenses for less than half the amount, it better be amazingly sharp, with zero distortion or even a hint of CA at any FL. I don't get these mini kit lenses, standard ones are hardly huge, people say 'it'll fit in my pocket' - how many people carry lenses about in their pockets regular? I think pancake lenses and these collapsable primes are pointless, unless they can do constant aperture versions, at least F4 right through

Some day one of these companies will have the balls to release something like this but at actual budget friendly prices. They had the chance here ... they'll catch some must-have early adapters but most will just hold out until it drops by a LOT or ... just buy a used or grey Z6.

Gosh, Nikon are playing Sony games, remember the RRP of the 16-50 and 28-70, hilarious, it basically forces most to consider the kit price because it appears to be a'bargain'.
