Nikon Z* mirrorless

I traded my Z6 in with SRS Microsystems, who not only offered the best price (plus the £180 promotion), but never haggled once when the camera turned up and honoured the quote without question. I had the Z6 II within two days of the Z6 arriving with them. My "old" Z6 also was part of the 24-70 F4 and FTZ package, so I just sent the smaller white box for the Z6 (with all accessories of course), to keep the size of the package down, and they were totally happy with that, so I still have the outer carton if it's any use to you ?

I got my Z6ii from Grays and then sent my Z6 in after for trade in and they refunded me the trade in retrospectively. Can't beat that kind of service in my book.

Thanks appreciate the offer, its up on eBay with just the kit box. Probably doesn’t make much of a difference now. More just the frustration of the crappy experience start to finish with Wex.

I’ll keep them in mind for future, I think it’s too late to trade now. £920 was acceptable (plus the bonus) for the lack of hassle (lol) for trade in. I think prices are now too low.

My choice of photography in these lockdown times...might specialise in dog photography after this :)

Two next photos are her usual, full speed, running photos...but the clear backgrounds and better light make a difference here. Second photo sadly has some blown highlights.

Next one is a full photo, no cropping...at close distance, lens and camera stuck with her:

Love them. Brilliant series.

I bought a pre-owned 35 1.8 and, no surprises, it's lovely!

Time to get the 85 1.8 ordered.

I'm wondering if with those two lenses, I actually need the 24-70 anymore.....

I have the 35, 50 and 85 1.8 primes and love them all, but when just walking about, I don't think you can beat the convenience of a zoom, so my 24-70 F4 S is staying.

Hmmm clearly something has gone wrong uploading that here as it looks awful. Here's a 100% crop of the original to see if that's any better.

50mm prime up for sale in the classifieds. As well as my Tamron 70-200 2.8!

Well amid the chaos of a new kitchen refit, still not had chance to properly use the new Z6 II, but the MB-N11 Grip turned up from Wex yesterday, and totally improves the feel and handling (especially with the bigger lenses). It's what the MB-N10 battery grip should have been in the first place.

It's weird, back in the day I coveted the Nikon D3s and D4 (even owned both of them briefly), and without knowing it, the Z6 II has better high ISO, more FPS, deeper buffer, more MP, has twin card slots and arguably better AF etc. than both of them. About the only thing they really beat the Z6 II on is battery life, which is something I don't think any mirrorless camera will better (certainly not for the foreseeable future anyway).

The grip really does improve the feel doesn't it? I thought I'd be removing it most of the time for carry around but I think it'll stay on there full time.

Yes Pete, makes it feel like a smaller DLSR doesn't it. after using the MB-N10 for about a year (which obviously doesn't have any external controls), it's nice to have the vertical shooting controls back again.

I have that grip Doug, got it nearly 2 years ago and it's been great. The only downside is it's a pain to change batteries if you want to keep the battery door on the camera to maintain weather sealing.

Just taken delivery of a CFE card to replace the crumbling Sony XQD card. First impressions are that it is like night and day. Transfer speeds are massively increased.

Wasn't impressed by having to replace the XQD after 18 months, and even less impressed at having to buy a new card reader too! However, it does seem like a positive experience overall.

Which brand did you go for and which camera are you using it with? Did you need to do anything to get your CFE card to work? Is the construction better and which card reader did you buy? I use 2 x Sony G 64GB QXDs

I use Pro-Grade CFE cards now after having Sony XQD cards crack around the bottom plastic. I got my CFE card as soon as the Z6 was capable of using them and had no issues at all with them. The plastic quality of the Sony cards seems too variable as some seem to crumble, others are fine.

Have you had a situation where a XQD has crumbled disallowing you to remove the data? Got me worried now

No it’s actually a small part of the plastic around the pins area that cracks and breaks off. It’s actually still working fine but I did have to fish the plastic piece out of my card reader in one case and it fell out of the camera the second time I had it. The issue is more if the broken off piece damaged the camera really.

I went with a prograde Cfe card. Using it in my Z6. No adjustments needed, just popped it in the camera, formatted and off we went. It has a metal frame unlike the cheap Sony xqd. The reader is from Amazon, brand: Arkidyn £31.99. Lovely solid feel and a massive improvement over the ‘about to break’ plastic Sony reader. Connects with usb-c too. Read speeds are 4x faster!

Not yet, but it’s only a matter of time I think. The outside edge, where you place your thumb and finger to remove it has crumbled on mine. There was another post I read where some plastic snapped off their card and it fell into the camera slot causing big problems. I wasn’t prepared to wait until this happened so switched to cfe.

Well my 50 1.8 has a new home with @Hadge, hopefully he'll share some shots with it :)

A small line of plastic has broken off my Lexar 440MB XQD on the opposite end of the contacts, just where the metal meets the plastic. Still works well and I got it on release day of the D500. My other ones still like new.

I may flog a 64GB XQD Sony G I got brand new last month, and try out the new cfe card.

That's a good deal, not sure if I'd go for a plastic one when you can get the metal one from pro-grade though

I'm happy enough with my XQD cards, as I'd need a new card reader too if I changed. Unless your gaining something that the XQD can't give you then why bother. I think it's only transfer speeds that's really different as shooting frames and buffer is still the same.

Anybody used the Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8 with the FTZ adapter on the Z6 / Z7. How's the AF? I'm not sure if it works?

I guess it's just the preference of having something with more longevity. Might as well swap now while it's brand new, rather than later after it's crumbled :). I'm needing a new reader too as my new Laptop is usb-c, and the USB-A to USB-C adaptors are a PITA. If I haven't forgotten it, it needs a few attempts to be recognised that something is connected. Seems as good a time as any :)

Looks sweet. I've never had a camera with vertical controls and that combo looks beautiful :-O

I have not tried as I sold my copy of that lens as I ended up going Sony versus a Z6II. However, in my research when I was deciding everywhere I looked suggested it "should" work, mine was an AF-S version if that makes any difference though :)

Has anybody noticed issues with the hoods on any of their z lenses? My 85mm z bought new has a very 'dry' hood which doesn't lock and unlock nicely. I have to hold the edge of the hood in-between my palm and fingers to get it to 'unlock and lock' it - unlike my 50mm which is super nice and easy. Is it defective?
