I think 3 and 4 are allright, but 1 and 2 are too cluttured for the macro lookup feel you are trying to get?

How common is it for shots like 3 & 4 to be taken with a macro lens and do you think it is reasonable to use this lens for non macro shots ?
 
Im no pro, far from it. Complete novice! But I use my Sigma 180mm macro apg for normal telephoto stuff. I sometimes think it has better quality shots than the Nikon 70 to 300 VR. I often combine the Sigma with a 1.4 teleconvertor for longer FL.

You got good DOF on the 2 macro shots but they struggle with a focal point. My eye is not falling on one thing or moving through the image easily. I use my macro lenses for other stuff to as they are good sharp prime lenses capable of 1:1 macro so why wouldn't you use them? Your 105 is a useful lens and using a prime lens I feel it will make you think about a photo more then just using a zoom.
 
the Nikkor 105 Macro (VR) is great for all sorts of stuff - esp portraits - as well as macro - have fun!
