Yes
For all historical building experts , What is that jagged vertical slot for just above water line for?. Not the arch one but the one to the left of it

This is at Scotney Castle in Kent which is a fortified house. maybe just a bit of wall fallen out?

Possibly an arrow slit to dissuade anyone attacking via the moat?

Not an arrow slit.
It is in the shape of an arrow when you enlarge it.
I suspect it is pointing at the drain plug position.

:D

From the website; take your pic:

  • There is a secret door in the library made to look like a bookcase
  • Margaret Thatcher had an apartment here during her time in office
  • Richard Gere starred in a film here in 1979 called Yanks
  • There are hidden priest holes in the Old Castle
  • In the quarry there is the footprint of an Iguanadon
I would ask whether it might have been connected with item 4?

Gardyloo outlet?
There has to be one somewhere.

That is exactly my initial thought......what better location for the outlet than into the moat!

Edit - not Gardyloo which was the warning shout before they dumped the "waste" out of the window. It is, as the castle toilet, called the Garderobe. I think in many castles that room would be accessed from the banqueting hall!

PS maybe in modern parlance this might called "a long drop"

i think all that is about the manor house that was built from tearing down the fortified house below. rear view

back end of fortified house. i would imagine where the lawn is now was part of the building which would have stood here

The manor house on the hill above was left to the national trust exactly as the previous lady owner left it which is quite usable even today
