Hi All,

I've just recently got back into photography and upgraded some of my old kit. I took this one last week which I'm quite happy with.

I feel this would be much stronger in portrait mode, even with the reflection. I like the chosen exposure though.

I agree with Edward regarding the orientation.

This aside, the lighting and reflection wouldn't look out of place in a magazine advertisement.

I don't! I think it is clever the way it is… though

— the dynamic range is too restricted • this comment
is under reserve that I did not see the original!

— this is a monochrome subject affected with colour
parasitic reflections… why not make a conversion?

… a darn good take, anyway!

Thanks for the feedback guys. I was just trying to get a nice clean shot of the watch and didn't factor in the composition too much. The main problem I have when taking watch pictures is keeping the bracelet from folding. For this one I actually took a long strip of card and rolled it into a spiral/spring to stretch the bracelet out. In terms of getting it to sit correctly in portrait I wouldn't know where to start without a specialist stand/prop. :exit:

Pete, I quite like the composition and am not at all sure portrait mode would suit but you could try. There are various cheap watch stands made from clear acrylic which you can purchase for a couple of pounds on eBay to help position the watch as you want it.

Thanks Dunc, I will look that up. It seems exactly what I need. (y)

Yes, they're very handy. You can sometimes find older sales stands where the part that inserts into the watch band is made of rubber covered metal. Those are actually much better as they don't break all the time. The acrylics ones tend to be quite fragile. I use them to get the bracelet even like in the shot:

I'm off to look a few watches today so will ask if they have any spare. Worth an ask!

That's a beautiful shot by the way. Would love to see your lighting setup for that.

Wow that's a great setup Dunc. Those acrylic diffusers are great, I've just bought a small cheap tent but not got round to using it yet. I just wish I had the space to set up something permanent like that, I have to setup everytime I want to take a few shots which is a real pain as it's sometimes difficult to replicate my last setup.

I know how that feels, Pete. I had the same problem in my last place. If you look at the first photo in my linked setup, inside the main box is a smaller mini diffuser. You could get one of those made. It's only about 30 x 30cm and can be just picked up and placed on any table. It works well, too.

I'm defiantly going to look into that Dunc. I also need to invest in some lighting. Can I ask if you used all 4 of those lights for that photograph? My photo above was just ambient lighting which is fine when when conditions are right but obviously uncontrollable when it's not right.

If I remember right I only used the two smaller table lights for that shot, placed left and right of the box.

It's a Damasko DC66 by the looks of it. Nice watch.

Thanks for the info regarding lamps Dunc. :)

Hi Dunc:

What's the low down on the make of that watch you photographed please? Lovely looking watch, what is the make and kind of price?

Regards;
Pete

Pete's right. It's a Damasko DC66 on the OEM iced steel bracelet.

They're £2100 on the bracelet. They have many different models, though:

They're one of the toughest watches ever made. The iced steel process makes them virtually impossible to scratch.

@WingTsun Vey nice those Dunc. I've owned a few speedies over the years, mainly 3570.50s, they are fantastic watches for the money. A great history and very similar design to the original. Excellent pictures again too, thanks for sharing.:ty:

I've been out looking for a new watch today but nothing quite took my eye. I did get my name down on the list for new Daytona though.:)
