IMO, the placement of the light, and the ratio is better in the second image (but I would still adjust the overall contrast/DR). The first is just underexposed (it would improve with a higher ISO/larger aperture).
What are you using for a light source? It looks to be quite small/hard (which is fine if that's what you're going for).
I often shoot with a one light setup... but I think your source is too far away. It's close enough when you have to be a contortionist to shoot around it.
Looks like a smallish rectangular softbox placed closer in the second shot than in the first. Too low to my taste, the shadow on the Boy moves upward and it lights up hos nostrils. Conditionious or studiostrobe with modelling light
