This is it folks, the new photographer of the year competition, it is the biggest shake up of the photography of the year competition since it's inception.

The photographer of the year competition is for you, our members. With much improved prizes and new rules it should be much easier for everyone to get involved. Whether you try for the full year or just jump in and do some of the months it is up to you, we have prizes for both.

We have a new sponsor, Ottoman Photography, who is supplying the monthly prizes and a brilliant holiday for the overall winner, so many thanks it is very much appreciated. RedSnapper have agreed to sponsor the film section of the competition and will supply the winner with a tripod and head.

The rule changes which we have made are in order to improve the competition and get the most out of YOU, our members. We are now releasing ALL the themes at the start of the year so that you have plenty of time to take those pictures. With the addition of special months and also allowing an explanatory phrase to go with your image it is now more about taking the pictures than interpreting the theme.

This is a competition for ALL members to enter, regardless of skill, technique, knowledge, or camera.

This is how it works....

I am the ONLY person that actually knows who's images are who's. The images when submitted go to a private mailbox on my server from TP's server and at the close of business for that month I create a thread in a hidden forum which can only be seen by the judges, admin and mods. ONLY THE JUDGES have any say whatsoever about any of the images and admin/mods do not make any comment. Once the judges have all made up their minds they submit their own top ten list and I collate the results giving the points as per the rules to each image. This then gives us a list of the top maybe 20 images (some images might make one judges top ten but not another). I then cut these off at tenth place (or 11th/12th/13th if there is a tie) and award the months points based on the judges list (there are some rules to split it where there is a tie and these rules are shown below). I also pick out any of the members who are film only who score anything from any judge and give them alternative scores based on their position amongst film only entrants and then add those to the film only score board.

Remember this is a competition and the rules are all here to be viewed. Please read them and make sure you follow them. Being excluded from a month because your image wasn't taken in 2013 or too large etc is totally avoidable and PLEASE do not take it personally if this happens. It is not petty but part of the competition process.

I have opened a thread for discussion of the new competition and it is located here.

General info

  • There are 12 rounds, each running calendar monthly.
  • The themes will be decided in advance.
  • Only one photo can be submitted per round per member.
  • Photos must be taken between the theme being released and the closing date.
  • The closing date for entries each round will be 23:59 on the last day of the month.
  • Any images deemed NSFW will be displayed as normal in the judges room but shown as links in the competition section.
  • All images will be subject to the general forum rules on decency etc.

Image specifications

  • Images (or scans of film) must be sized at no larger than 1600 pixels on the longest side. [hint - The ideal would be 1200x1000 or 800x1024 so that it fits on most peoples monitors without THEM having to re-size it. You can THEN sharpen it at it's final size which gives the best image]
  • Images should NOT be watermarked or otherwise identifiable to maintain anonymity.
  • The aim of the competition is to improve your photography. With this in mind, taking your photo specifically for the competition is encouraged so all entries must be taken during 2013.
  • Entries must not have been previously shown elsewhere, and must remain so until voting for the round has ended (including flickr, Facebook etc).

Post processing
  • Specific months will exclude ALL post production, shown in theme list as [no PP]. RAW to JPG conversion and corrections normally associated with this i.e. colour temp correction & sharpening will be allowed. (You MAY be asked to supply the original image file)
  • Specific months will allow ANY post processing, shown in theme list as [ANY PP].
  • In February there are 3 options, options 2 & 3 are HDR & stacked. Both of these will allow PP necessary to complete this.
  • Members entering as "FILM ONLY" will be covered by the film specific rules.
  • All other months will allow REASONABLE post production but this is a photography competition and excessive post production not relevant to the specific theme may mark your entry down. So basically you are allowed to crop, straighten, colour correct etc but the less you do the better your chances.....

Film section specific rules

  • You enter the competition as normal
  • You include "FILM SECTION" in the entry
  • You must take your images on film in any format.
  • You may mess with the images using traditional film techniques post development ie to create a print from negative then scan print.
  • In the poster and december months you may take your scanned print or negative into the digital domain and carry out digital post production work to create a poster etc BUT any images used must be your own and taken on film.

So for "film only" entrants:

  1. Take shot on film
  2. Develop yourself OR Have developed
  3. Scan negative and submit OR Print image, scan image and submit.

BUT in the poster and december months you may then use the scans digitally to make a montage or otherwise mess them them.

You may, in any month that allows post production, do manual post production extended/retarded development, selection of developers, cross developing, burning etc etc IF you are printing yourself from your negatives or in creating the negatives (if scanning negatives then spot dust removal is acceptable but we may ask to see the original). In a [no pp] month you can only mess with the negative/print globally by selection of developer and adjusting time etc so no cross processing, dodging, burning etc....

  • Please call your entry YOUR USERNAME
  • You will receive a confirmation once your email is sent, if you do not then please use contact us.

Please now include the following header which includes the username, month, film bits which have been removed as rules because they are now in this bit:

Scoring

  • A league table will be maintained and posted as soon as possible after voting is completed and the winner announced.
  • The judging panel's decision is final.
  • You may not comment on the judges decision (this will result in an infraction and your being barred from the competition).
  • You may not contact the judges, if you have a complaint or query use the RTM button to contact staff.
  • You may not post entries on TP, Facebook or any other public place until after judging is complete.
  • Points towards the annual prize will be awarded as follows:
    1st : 25 points
    2nd : 18 points
    3rd : 15 points
    4th : 12 points
    5th : 10 points
    6th : 8 points
    7th : 6 points
    8th : 4 points
    9th : 2 points
    10th : 1 point
  • Judges will place entrants in order of merit and award points as above also. Where more than one person has the same number of points in total the position will be based on most 1st place positions, then most 2nd places, then 3rds after that they will tie. In the event of ties for 1st place even after the above then the head judges order will decide the winner. If the head judge has placed them equally then the order will be decided by a vote of moderators over 24 hours from moment of posting a decision thread.
  • At the end of the year position 1 to 3 will also be based on the above allocation of points over the year.

Prizes
  • The winner of each round will receive the current monthly prize (see section below).
  • Runners-up and 3rd place prizes will be specified before the start of the month (note no 2nd/3rd prizes during test months)
  • All winners, 2nd and 3rd place holders for each month will get a book at the end of the year containing the winning images. (not during test months)
  • At the year end the winner will receive the big end of year prize to be announced at the launch of the competition (not during test months)

Judging criteria

Note that every point here does not necessarily have the same weight. This is a photography competition and the art side carries more weight than the technical side but some things are ultimately important such as fitting within the rules.

1. Does it fit the theme of the months competition and Does the photo tell a story?

  • At a minimum, does the photo make a statement that you can articulate?
  • Does the photo elicit an emotion? In other words, can you relate to the subject or the situation?
  • What could be changed in the image to give it a stronger story or message.
2. Is there a clear center of interest?

  • When you look at the photo, what is the first thing you see? If you're evaluating your own image, is what you see first the subject you had in mind for the photograph?
  • What holds your eye the longest?
  • Do other elements in the image compete with the subject for attention?
  • Do technical aspects such as light and the direction of light, depth of field, focus, and so on add to or detract from the subject?
3. Is the image well composed? - judges will consider the overall composition and may take into account any or none of the following as they feel appropriate:

  • Rule of Thirds (Used or Broken the rule and if it works)
  • Balancing Elements within the image (avoiding voids within images)
  • Leading Lines
  • Symmetry and Patterns
  • Viewpoint - taking the image from above or below rather than just shooting from eye level.
  • Background - Does it fit the subject or is the subject lost within a background.
  • Depth of the image.
  • Framing of the image
4. Is the focus crisp and is the exposure appropriate?

  • Is the sharpest point in the image on the center of interest of the subject of the photo?
  • Does the depth of field enhance the subject, mood, or look of the image or does it distract from it?
  • Does the focal length or zoom setting enhance the subject and message?
  • Does the image have good overall contrast for the type image the photographer intended?
  • Does the color appear natural and/or does it help set the mood of the image?
  • If the image is in color, would it be stronger in in black and white, or vice versa?
5. Does the lighting enhance the subject and message?

  • Is the intensity and color of light appropriate for the subject?
  • Is the light too harsh, too contrasty, or is it too soft and too flat?
  • Are all important aspects of the subject well lit, or could the lighting be improved by using a flash, fill flash, reflector, or auxiliary light?
  • Does the light help convey the overall message of the photo?
  • In a color photo, is the color balanced or corrected for the light temperature (in other words, the overall color should be natural-looking). And if it isn't, does the color cast contribute to the photo?
6. Is the approach creative?

  • Does the photo disclose more about the subject, or show it in unexpected ways?
  • Does the photo relate visual elements in unusual and intriguing ways?
  • Is the photo interesting and fresh, or is it just too weird for words?
7. Does the image meet the overall rules?

  • Is the image within size guidelines?
  • Has the image been taken during the time allowed?
  • Is the image the persons own work?
  • Has the image been previously shown?
  • Has it been submitted within the time allowed?

Final word

These rules and guidelines may change without warning, although we will endeavour to give you as much warning as possible of any changes that will adversely affect the competition. Also, please note that should they need to intervene, Site Staff will have the final decision on any problems that arise.

All that's left to say is good luck to every single one who enters, and may we help you enjoy your photography :)

Kind Regards,
The Talk Photography Staff

May - Landscape [no pp]

As explained in the rules this is the first month where there is no post processing allowed. Now the reason for this is to say "get it right in the camera", why not try using film? This should be your chance to show your photographic skills.

Although it states no post processing RAW to JPG conversion and corrections normally associated with this i.e. colour temp correction & sharpening will be allowed.

No PP has been agreed as follows:

  • Film of any type processed commercially or by the participant.
  • jpg straight from camera
  • RAW file from camera converted to jpg by user without enhancement, straightening or cropping BUT colour correction which includes B&W conversion is allowed.
(You MAY be asked to supply the original image file)

July - Iconic poster [any pp]

We've all seen those iconic posters such as:

  • 2 sets of footsteps in the sand then one
  • Man cannot live on beer alone
  • Tennis bottom
  • Earth rise

This is your chance to create your own poster. This could be a re-creation of an older poster (one of the above or any other) or something completely new. You may use as much PP as you like and in any form that you like. Photoshop, GIMP, Illustrator...... Any can be used and you can combine any number of images.

There is a special rule though - Any photographic images MUST be your own.

December - Anything at all !

So, maybe your favourite picture of the year that might have fitted in another month but taken after that month; a greatings card or poster; something Christmassy or anything else that you want. This is your last chance to win the annual prize, lets hope its still up for grabs by this time...

This states anything at all but remember that the same PP rules stand as in the poster competition of July.....
