Okay ... bit nervous posting these but please tell me what you think.

Straight out of camera (expect cropping) RAW via Lightroom (if that makes sense). Anyway am I somewhere on the right lines or completely hopeless. Closeup is new to me and these were taken in the wild (and hand held) and pretty much using my own instinct...

Any pointers (including suggested reading / learning material) would be of help.

(Oh and they probably aren't technically pine cones, probably a completely different species or something)

The first is the better shot think, close up photography handheld without flash l find pretty tough unless you have enough light to use a fast shutter with a small aperture.

I think you could have upped the iso quite a bit to get a faster shutter speed. The first one seems a bit soft but is a better composition than the other one.
Ps I'm pretty sure they are Larch cones, so yes they are pine cones.

I think you have done well with no flash and hand held. Much of the literature says you should use a tripod for macro but it's not always possible.Well not for me anyway. I like it and its defo Larch.
