Just to make sure that the horses would be comfortable
with a clicking stranger among them, a short shooting test
session was planned.

This client is an Islander Horses breeder who wants to redo
the website and print material for the next season.

A deep grey daybreak got much brighter, to my relief, and
these are some of the takes of that morning…

These are just teasers! You must have more!

In the images that you show, you have captured well the horse at play.

Love them.

You must have more!

I have learned so much on this very special horse breed
since twenty-four hours!

I had some personal past
experience with Percherons as
I owned three when I was home. The Percherons may be
playful too but their mass is only equaled by their enthu-
siasm… both, specially when combined, can be deadly.

But these are so sweet and gentle when required and so
crazy bombastic when left alone and free to behave like
in nature.

Yes, there is more, I will send you the link to the password
gallery; there are 69 pictures posted there! The shootings
will go on over the weekend as the client expressed his sa-
tisfaction with these. Until then, they are preparing and clea-
ning up some areas foreseen for the shoot.

Thanks for dropping by…

I'm no expert on horses, but I've never heard of them so wonder if they are Icelandic horses?
Just checked with google translate and Islande (French) = Iceland (English).

wonder if they are Icelandic horses?

A person may speak Icelandic but is, like the
horse, an Icelander (Islander). I was in a few
country around Europe and in the local lan-
gauge may be one or the other it is very con-
fusing… but you're right, in French we use the

Islandic name root!

In any case they are of course islanders/habitants des îles -- Iceland/Islande being an island/île ;-)

I like the shots Kodiak but wonder if it would be possible to lose the wire fence in your future shots?

Where they are, right next to a fence (that's why no grass!)
I removed the fence already. By the corn field, I had to leave
it… I am sure the farmer does not want horses in the corn!

Can you not shoot in a different direction?

It may just be me but the fence detracts from the shots, if it was wooden I may not even of noticed it.

And remember:

Thanks for the Porter tube, ;) … nice surprise!
Can you not shoot in a different direction?

Euh… nope, no chance!
Behind me, the stables: new concrete, new boards, tractors and…
To the right: a huge pile of…
To the left is where the Sun wanted to show himself if only the clouds
would have give him a chance!

The "electric" fence is never under tension I was told. I know, you will
say that this can't be seen… and you'd be right!

Nice snaps Kodiak it's a shame though that you seem to have missed focus on them, #1 looks close but the others seem a little off

Which part of the pictures do you see a little off?

Well petty much all of it tbh, #1 the eye should be the main focus point I feel and it's not quite there. #2 all of the horses face. #3 the nicest snap of them all, but needs a crop, again both faces not in focus. #4 & #5 I can't really see what the focus point was as I can't see anything that is in clear focus.

The one in post #15 looks the sharpest which is a shame as it isn't the prettiest end of a horse :)

The first following is the SOOC full frame of picture #1
and the second is the same shot with DRL at 100%…

Well that certainly seems better than the 1st posting for sure, perhaps it's the way the forum is presenting them. It would be interesting to see if the forum has put the others out of focus too, I can only comment on what I see.

I understand. I have learned that something
somewhere is happening but I can't put my
finger on it.

These were taken with the D800E, the crazy
reduction and compression may be guilty?
That why I question what I see on the web!

Yup, they are Icelandic horses (NOT ponies - they get an inferiority complex if you call them ponies!!!) The inhabitants of Iceland are Icelandic and speak Icelandic.

Can't help liking these shots more than the ones in the other threads. IMO the light's better and the horses aren't backlit. While the movement in the others is nice to see, it doesn't show the Icelandic horse's characteristic gait which is quite unlike that of most other breeds (looks a bit odd; almost prancing. Developed to help the legs clear the snow on the move IIRC.)

The inhabitants of Iceland are Icelandic and speak Icelandic.

Wikipedia:
  1. Icelandic culture is founded upon the nation's Scandinavian heritage. Most Icelanders are descendants of…
  2. Icelandic, a North Germanic language, is descended from Old Norse
  3. The country's cultural heritage includes traditional Icelandic cuisine, Icelandic literature and medieval sagas.
  4. On 17 June 1944, when the Icelandic republic was founded, the Icelanders became independent from the Danish
    monarchy
. The language spoken is Icelandic, a North Germanic language.
So, Iceland (Island) is populated by Icelanders (Islanders) that speak Icelandic,
and share a cuisine, literature, and history that are all Icelandic
IMO the light's better and the horses aren't backlit.
No other position was possible for the takes in the other threads
but glad you like these! :)

I haven't checked this but I seem to remember that the Icelandic people are genetically about 50% Irish due to the Norsemen picking up "supplies" in Ireland on their way to Iceland.

That would be an interesting twist to the story!
Another twist. Originally I thought you had just misspelled the horses as Íslander rather than Icelander but have since realised you were entirely correct. No doubt you are very knowledgeable about the language as I see from Wikepedia that the largest population of Icelandic speakers outside Iceland is in Manitoba!!!
However what interests me in this is that though Icelandic and English are cousin languages Island in Icelandic really does mean land of ice whereas the English word island comes comes from the French "île" (I can't do the accent on this iPad) via the English word isle=island. The Icelandic word for island is eyjan and we have the not very common English word "eyot" meaning a small island. (All this is, as you say, par Toutatis, or at least par Google.)
Edit. After posting I see that the iPad has automatically added the circumflex accent to "île" somehow divining what I meant!

Thanks Richard, that was a cool read!

:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

… and the largest French speaking community
outside France is in Québec! ;)
