I'm not sure what makes a really good portrait photo

For me it's engagement & character. If someone can look at my photo and say "yep. that's them!" then I've achieved what I set out to. #1 in this bunch does that for me. #4 is a more classical "representaion" that's well composed and lit, but it's not as interesting to me as #1 (In My Opinion). Sometimes it's best just to cut loose and have fun with people, recording them mucking about and just being them. They will be the photos people stop on when they're thumbing through your prints, album or book.

I'm sure others will chime in with their opinions so take what you like etc. etc!
 
2 & 3 might have been better vertical, or as it's known, portrait orientation :)
As for what makes a good photo, who knows? I think photography in that sense is very subjective and personal.
