There are tow elements here:

the dog: looks very good in the OP and
the BG: looks horribly over exposed.

I created an adjustment layer and masked
the dog. Then inverse the mask and, yes,
cut out mid tones and applied some highlights
recovery.

Are there any tips so I can get Background better exposed in shot?

It does seem to have a magenta hue though

The camera's meter read the scene as dark
(and your dod is even darker) so the take was
recorded properly by the combo.


The only mistake is your interpretation of the
recorded data. Luckily for you, the scene was
captured on the dark values as the camera did
ignore the higher ones.
