Beginner Print size for Club competitions

I print on A4, it's never been a problem. No judge has ever said it's too small. I've also seen smaller prints and again there's never been a problem.
Sometimes (or should I say, most of the time) my print doesn't fill the whole A4 size paper, because of how I have cropped the image. Then there's the border I leave for mounting, which reduces the size again (by a little bit).

Most if not all clubs will have a rule about the size of the prints - normally it will be a minimum size - and then a rule about the size of the mount. Most clubs use a 50cm x 40cm mount for the image. And some clubs will have rules about the colour of the mount as well.

In our club there is a maximum MOUNT size of 50 x 40cm, which I believe is quite common.
Many mount suppliers offer pre-cut mounts of this size.
The print within this mount can be any size.
I think I'd be ordering something larger than 12" x 8"
I lot of my prints are around 14" x 11" or even larger, which is about 35.5 x 28 cm
