Hi all, I have my first exhibition starting this week and am now actively trying to sell prints. Im doing my own printing with a pixma pro 1 and framing with off the shelf cheap frames to keep things affordable for now. Im looking for any info on the best practise for mounting and framing, Iv found a few bits and pieces in the archives but would like to be pointed to an idiots guide if possible. Also, Im selling some unframed mounted prints in a display rack in a local art shop, whats the best way to protect and present these, is there a standard plastic pouch or something I can purchase?
Thanks in advance,
Alan

Thanks for this mate, Ill have a good look when I get home tonight

Look at the hinge-mounting techniques for the print to help prevent warping. Also, look at using archival/conservation materials and proper manufacturers inks if you are looking for longevity of your print. Let prints dry properly before mounting. Especially large ones.

I display and sell my mounted prints in simple clear cellophane bags. There are many places online to get them from places like - https://www.worldofenvelopes.com/protective-bags/cello-bags/cello-bags-non-header.html to https://www.celloexpress.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=246. I would recommend trying to find a bag that will be a snug fit for your mount size. Excess bag always looks a bit tatty and get creased and messed up really easily. Sadly heavy handed people will always end up causing some damage to mounted prints eventually, either by picking them up roughly and bending the mount or shoving them back in the rack and squishing the corners :(

Also recommend these guys for mounts - https://www.picturemountsonline.co.uk/ - have been using them for years and really cant fault them :)

Thanks mate, thats the route I want to go, where financially viable, not sure Ill be using anti uv glass but I think its important to do the other bits. Gonna search the hinge mounting

Loads to help me here, thanks very much mate

You’re welcome - pm me or just ask on here for any further advice as there’s probably loads of stuff I’ve forgotten or trivial stuff I didn’t think to write about like wall fixings, etc. The blog posts are as much for me as everyone else as each time I have an exhibition I have to re-learn stuff!

Purely FWIW as every venue might and is indeed likely to have their own "terms".

The very first exhibition I did back 2014 the hanging was alarm wired by the site owners (an NHS district hospital). Hanging fee and % of sales values paid.

More recently (displaying again next month):-
A curated exhibition of shared space in a gallery space of destination venue, paid for space but all sales are fee free unless paid for by credit card (the venue provides the cc merchant service and deducts 5% ). Hanging is more simply but the curator/organiser recommended STAS hanging cords and hook clips. The most recent change is that the July exhibition and all future ones I need PLI.

@Clot on the Landscape hopefully the terms etc for your exhibition are all covered and best of luck and success with it :)

PS re: print browser ~ I now use one and made sure to choose one that has a flat base at the apex ......this means that mounted & bagged prints don't bunch up/jam and are at much reduced risk of damage by those browsing.

Re:- Hinge or T-hinge mounting

As mentioned by others this has come on numerous threads/posts. In the hope this helps here is one where I threw my 2p's worth in and includes some 3rd party videos showing a couple of variant methods.

FWIW if you search for Hinge with my username this will list a few threads over the past few years where the subject has come up with some variation as the OP .

Cheers BB, I have the same deal as yr 2014 exhibition, theyve also given me space for 2 mounted prints in the rack and 20 cards on a commision only basis. Iv not taken advantage of this yet but hope to have 2 mounted in there for Saturday. The cards maybe next time. Learning as I go, thanks for your help
