Didn't actually know where to put this, so please feel free to move moddies if it's in the wrong place.......

Anyhoo, when I print my pics, they always turn out darker than they look on the screen.
I don't know a great deal about printing, and my monitor is calibrated.

This is the shots I am attempting to print:

and

http://www.flickr.com/photos/andy_foster/4808900837/

(Sorry I can't post the actual images, but I can't do it, now flickr have ballsed up the site..........)

Both images look crap when printed.
I'm using an Epson 1290, high quality glossy paper and genuine Epson inks.
Tried all sorts of different settings, but I cannot afford to keep wasting prints.

:help:

how are you trying to print it (take screen grabs of the settings) and are you using epson paper?

Er, how come my pics have shown up in the reply

Not Epson paper, but it is premium glossy. I'll report back the make later as I'm at work now.

Likewise with the screen grabs.......
But I've tried using various settings, including the calibrated monitor profile, sRGB on the printer and photoshop settings.

Not much help until this evening when I'm in front of the PC!

I got the links off flickr lol

what is the make of glossy (does it come with an ICC profile) - it is very unlikely it is the same coating as epson so colours won't look the same if you are using the epson profile.

Andy

How did you calibrate your monitor ? Were you given the option to set the illuminance to a specific level or was it left up to the software.

It could be that your monitor is too bright. depending on the ambient illumination a setting of around 120-140 Cd/M₂. If you can try setting the brightness to this range and see if that helps.

Also are the colours accurate or are the prints to dark to judge

Dark print's monitor to bright, Bright print's monitor to Dark..:)

Thank you all for your help so far.......

Not much use at the moment, as I'm on my work computer.
I'm very new to monitor calibrating, having never done it before and don't really fully understand it :bonk:

Looking at the sample images I (POAH!!!!!) have posted below, they look exactly the same on my work laptop as they do at home,
and the same again on my laptop and desktop at home
They don't look too dark on screen.
And the colours themselves don't look very accuate on the prints either.....

Can provide more info this evening when I get home.

also remember than prints absorb light monitors emit light so generally they are going to be brighter. your calibrated monitor neess to be around 90cd/m2 for brightness

check the chart on this page - can you see all the blocks?

The fact the colours aren't right as well may indicate that the printing options are not set up correctly as well as the screen being too bright. . What software are you using to print the images ?

I'm using CS5.

Far too many printing options for me on there :wacky:

If I make my desktop PC less brighter, then surely the image wouldn't look right on other screens??
My images look fine on my work and home laptops

This is going to drive me mad

to print from CS5

click print and have your settings like this (also you'd need to choose the correct ICC profile for your paper)

print1f.jpg

then you have to make sure your ICM is turned off so you don't get interference from your printer. under media type choose premium gloss

ps6_color_30.gif

then click advanced

ps6_color_41.gif

you can get the epson ICC Profiles here

I think you mean reflect light not absorb.

Well unless you wish to get technical and say, 'it absorb all the light apart from the colour wavelength that it reflects'
IE if you see red it will reflect Red wavelength and absorb all other wavelength (colours)....

yes

Right, I'm home and sat at the PC!!

The paper I am using is Initiative office products ( ) specialist inkjet paper, premium photo glossy paper.
I also have some Epson photo quality inkjet paper (but not much of it left!)

Just going to try the settings you have recommended and see what happens......

Thanks a million for your excellent reply POAH (y)

Right, now we're getting somewhere :)

Downloaded and installed the ICC profiles and used your settings, and there's a HUGE difference.

Very nearly spot on prints........

Cheers Ali.

Not 100% accurate, but a damn site closer.
Perhaps a bit of fine tuning on the calibrating front may help......

POAH has been a star
