Rare roman lighthouse at Dover Castle built around the first half of the second century. Another was on the other side of the valley. They showed the entrance to the Dour Estuary. A third was on the other side of the English Channel at Tour d'Odre estuary at Boulogne.
The top half was later on added to and used by the Anglo Saxon church as a bell tower in 1426
