These little fellows were thought gone!

An ecology scientist friend of mine was very surprised to
see that shot after telling me last fall that they don't under-
stand why bats vanished from the valley's ecosystem.

This very harsh flash is not my usual way but, as I
was capturing the renovations/restorations results

of a subsidized historical site in the area, I happened
to discover this bunch of Chiropterans hanging from
the roof of the mill and wanted to take a shot without
stressing them… a very quick and simple flash take.

It is very rare that images of bats appear on these forums, particularly in there natural habitat and in a group like this It is a lovely detailed shot with rich color. Good to see how they live in a group and the closeness they achieve whilst resting.

Are you even allowed to photo bats.....

They are a very protected species. Even more rights than immigrants :):):)

Bats are not making a case for themselves. I suspect
many toggers would like to have a closer look at them
but, contrary to birds, their active time of day is wrong
for photography.

Fascinating mammals they are but it was, for me, very
much discomfort to be with them —even just for a snap,
because the heat up there under the roof is deadly
how can they survive that?

I was
surprised how calm they were though well aware of
my presence.

Bats have a very poor eyesight as they count more
on their sonar.

So, at close range and @ƒ4 in TTL, the burst can
not have disturbed them much. As I left them, none
had moved and all was quiet. :)
