Rusty bits

Just started learning, and getting used to my 350d,
but had a go this morning and came up with these...
Any advice/pointers greatly appreciated..

I really like number 2!
Number one is a good concept as rust can be a very bold contrasty subject, however it seems a bit soft and pale to me.
 
Both pics seem very soft, did you remember to sharpen for web (sorry if Im teaching you to suck eggs).

I think the 1st shot would appeal to me more as a nice contrasty b&w.
I like #2 as it is, lovely classic winter shot ... just needs sharpening up. :)
 
^^^^ I agree, #1 would work well B&W or Duotone. Welcome to the forum too ;)

Both images were straight off the camera's CF card. No editing afterwards. Just tried sharpening one of the images
in GiMP tonight, and it does look a lot better (y)

Will get the hang of image-editing yet....
 
I think the second would have made a nice shot, but does need sharpening and it is a little dark.
