Made 2 trips to the bridge and walked along it. On the 2nd visit there was a little sun and occasional blue sky which made for better images than the greyness of the previous day.

I never realised it was so big. Is it true they have teams of painters permanently working on this thing?

Yep. It's true.
There are now paints that would mean they could reduce the work involved, but they choose to continue with full time (very well paid) bridge maintenance teams, using the same vermilion "International Orange" paint that's been used since the late '40s.
