I have a headshot to do for an actor later this week and so I thought I'd have a quick try of a selfie in the format I was thinking, a bit Peter Hurley but without 4 lights! The background was completely swapped out in PS so a little rough, but the general feel I think will do the job, any comments contrary or otherwise appreciated.

You got everything right, here, Kris, an almost perfect
passport photo!

Your chosen light has no direction whatsoever and that
makes the picture flat… bright, sharp but flat… and this
may be desirable on older folks — skin age oblige —but,
IMO, not on a man that might otherwise show character
and personality.

The white BG contributes to make it even flatter; a uniform
BG is ok but white ~ maybe not. A personal taste and view.

I agree with you Daniel, but it seems to be the in vogue look for headshots, see Mr Hurley!

STOP IT RIGHT THERE KRIS!

En vogue? Possibly with people with a tan. contrasty clothes,
even makeup. Your tan, at this time of the year, is as pink as
the plump thighs of my grand-daughter — AND MINE BTW!

AFAIAC, the only "en vogue" for me is good taste… and this is,
was, and always will be a case by case assessment including
location considerations.

Should someone ask for this by name than go for it. Otherwise,
YOU decide what and how it will be done. Your name signs the
pictures not Hurley's.

All fair points. I have swung it to pretty much how the photographers the agency have been using, are shooting. Business headshots seem to have more shadow detail than actor shots from the limited research I've done. It's easy enough to shoot various versions on the day so I'll have a think about that. Worth those comments alone, so thanks.

Probably slightly shallower depth of field for one of the versions on the day so that the sharp focus on the eyes make them “pop”. The guidance on Spotlight is useful for these shots, they need to stand out when a busy casting director is flicking through the various candidates for a role.

Background is also important - many prefer some outdoor shots in the mix (or fancy backdrops and creative lighting?).

Yes, was going to shoot some with a shallow DOF for that reason. Noticed some with outdoor bg’s too.

He’s gone and cancelled tonight so not to worry, maybe the next time. I might just go do myself how Id prefer I think.

+1 needs more squinch.

(Edit to add that I found that talking to people about squinching whilst taking their portrait got a lot of natural smiles and expressions)
