Hi I'm experimenting and have switched my Nikon D5300 to Jpeg/Raw fine. if I use Adobe photoshop elements 11, will my raw files be read?

Also how do I recognise which one's are raw files on my yellow folder in windows?

Thanks.

No, the D5300 needs at least version 8.3 of the Adobe Camera Raw plugin, but Elements 11 only supports versions up to 7.4:

https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html

The raw files will have the extension .NEF but this may not be visible by default. To see the file extension do this:

Although Elements 11 can't read D5300 NEFs directly, you can convert them to something it can read.

One method is to use Adobe's DNG converter to convert them to Adobe's 'universal' raw format, DNG:

https://helpx.adobe.com/uk/photoshop/using/adobe-dng-converter.html

Or you could use (for example) Nikon's own software to convert them directly to tiff (preferably) or jpg:

In windows file explorer. If you change the view to Group by :type it
shows the two file types as separate lists. Makes moving / copying them
a lot easier.

Thanks for your replie's. Am I better off upgrading to elements 12, then 11 to read raw files?

How do i do this? sorry bit confused.

When you point file explorer at the directory where you have up loaded your RAW and Jpeg files.
What you see by default is a list in numeric order so the two file types alternate.

Click on "view" (top left of screen), then a bit further down click "group by" and then in the drop down list
click on file type.

You then get two separate lists with the file types separated. Makes it easy to then move them to separate
locations for storage / pping.

If you want direct support of your raw files, Elements 12 is the oldest version that will work. You also need a compatible version of the Adobe Camera Raw plugin (see links above). Elements 13 and later will already have a compatible ACR plugin out of the box.

I am in the prcess of downloading
Capture NX-D

It's an experiment to see if that can read raw file. It's asked me to open with microsft store. What does this mean please?

with out doing anything file explorer will list you images in numerical order. Each image will have 2 listings 1234.nef and 1234.jpg

The .jpg will open with your in built windows software.

Nikons NX-view will allow the raw files to be viewed and some minor editing Capture NX will allow greater editing

I don't know why it would do that. How far did you get? Did you successfully download the installer (which will be called something like "S-NXD___-010502WF-ALLIN-ALL___.exe") to your PC? Did the message appear when attempting to download, or when attempting to run the installer after downloading it? It may help to post a screenshot of the error message.

Or ditch elements and buy a full version of Photoshop cc :) and get Lightroom thrown in

Always an option, though that £10 a month rental adds up after a while. Elements is £70, but works indefinitely. Don't know if you can get cheaper upgrade pricing from 11. Another option would be Affinity Photo, which is often rated higher than Elements and is currently discounted to £39:

On the other hand, Capture NX-D does a really good job of raw conversion - I use it myself for this, though I have Affinity and CS6.

I followed the instructions

You get Nikon Capture NX-D from Nikons own website LINKY

I just downloaded it myself yesterday.

What do I need to look for after clicking on link please?

I would, but it's expensive.

when you click on the link, you select your product, which in your case is Digital SLR, then click on your camera model, which takes you to the page with manuals and software (for D5300) you then select software and choose the second one down in the list marked "ViewNX-i & Capture NX-D"

then just click on download page, it should give you the windows version automatically (it does for a Mac), click agree and download.
