I was in about 5m of water, the sun was high in the sky and I was only snorkelling. Underwater its normal practise to use strobes to light subjects, at this time I just used available light :)

Oooh! My sort of thread :)

Here ya go - an American crocodile captured in a Mexican cenote... and yes, I was in the water with him! lol

@Bardo Hats off to you getting in the water with that! Not sure I've got the bottle for that yet!

Is this at Banco Chinchorro?

Actually he was surprisingly docile. It was a particularly hot day so we were both glad to be in the water!

This shot was actually taken at Car Wash cenote - the entrance pool to a cave in the Yucatan. I spotted this fella cooling down as we exited the cave system.

One of my favourite subjects, these guys are just awesome to watch in their environment!

Was on the Brothers Red Sea there were 3 of them swimming around this one just kept coming back

Cracking thread and lovely pictures! Look forward to seeing more.

Jason,

Love this shot. The lighting on the reef is perfect- clean light and color on the near reef while the background elements are 'blued out' with no light spill.

I had a look through some of your portfolio. Great stuff.

What underwater system do you shoot?

thanks,
rick

Ok, time for a nice warm water photo - this shot was taken in Ras Mohammed near Sharm back in December of last year...

Hi Rick - thanks for the very kind comments. Glad you like my portfolio!

I shoot using quite an old camera system (in relative terms)...

Nikon D300s + Nikon 10.5mm f/2.8 fisheye lens
Sea&Sea MDX-300s underwater housing + 8cm dome port
2 x Sea&Sea YS-D1 underwater strobes

I do also have 60mm and 105mm macro lenses and ports but, tbh, macro really isn't my thing.

I'm hoping to upgrade the whole system soon - I shoot using a Nikon D4 topside and I'll admit that I'd love an underwater camera that can handle high ISO shots as well as it can!

These are some amazing shots. It now makes me wish that I had a waterproof camera with me when we went snorkelling this summer. I shall keep a look out for one now that I have been inspired by the superb work here.

Hi Jason,

I'm using an EPL1 which is only about 6 months newer than the D300s and was a much less mature technology at the time so I hear you about upgrades. Then again, it is all about the glass and strobes (which you've clearly prioritized) underwater. Quite a few people are still using D70s and D200 era to good effect. I hear you about upgrading. I was considering the EM5 as it would be a great topside camera too (I only travel with 1 camera anymore), however olympus changed their port design so my Zen dome doesn't directly work (there are adapters). I think they have kept the Pen dome fit for the EPL7 though so that might be my option. A friend has one so I might borrow it a day and see how it shoots topside. I also need a second strobe. Decisions, decisions...

thanks,
rick

Yup - agree on all counts. The quality of your glass (both attached to your camera and that all-important 'window' in the front of your housing) and your strobes is all important. If you're in the market for a second strobe, I can highly recommend the Sea&Sea YS-D1 and D2 strobes. They're pricey but you do get what you pay for imho.

The D300s has served me well for years and I've always said that I'd only upgrade when clients commented about the quality of my shots. To date, I don't think I've ever had a client ask me why I'm still using an old camera! It's not the camera - it's the nut loose behind the shutter release that really counts. That said, I'd love to be able to shoot ambient at very high ISOs underwater here in the UK but my D300s just doesn't allow it - hence the need to upgrade.

Here's 1 to keep the thread going. I'm going to write a separate thread with lots more that I will link to from this thread.

Olympus EPL1 and olympus housing behind a Zen 4" dome using the 9-18 Olympus lens and a single Olympus UFL2 strobe. Shot in Cozumel about a month ago now.

Thanks,
rick

Bardo,

I am flying on Friday to Thailand and diving the Similans, Richelieu, Koh Bon, and some others for 3 weeks...

There will be pictures.

rick

I realized that I never went back and added the other photos to the cozumel thread, so this thread can benefit with a couple.

A HUGE hermit crab. It was easily 18-20" tip to tip on the shell.

Michael,

This trip was an olympus EPL-1 in the olympus black and red housing. I use both the 60 mm macro and the 9-18, both behind the Zen 100 port.

Next trip (this weekend) will be an EM5 in olympus housing with the same glass.

thanks
rick

Yeah, we will see. I think the acuity should be a bit better on the new one. The autofocus is definitely faster so I think my hit rate will go up on small stuff. I also have a second strobe so the lighting should be a bit easier.

Rick

First quick shots from day 1. Basic jpeg SOC in small size so a few processing issues on the cameras part.

I've not been diving in ages, it's been nice to look back at my photos, here are a few of them - strikes me my PP has got better since then so maybe worth a re-visit :)

Would be great to resurrect this thread! Any diving togs willing to post up their latest work? Here's one of mine from a trip to Mexico back in January...

Very nice Jason, how did you find the cenotes? Got anymore?

Well that could have been embarrassing, I thought the thread title said "Show us your underwear shots." :wideyed:

Amazing images folks. Keep em coming. (y)
