I worked Christmas Day this year, so our Christmas was delayed to New Year's Day, and we decided to go away for the long weekend. It's our last Christmas in Vegas so we made the most of it and headed up in to the hills!

On our way home, we stopped at a hike we've been wanting to do for a while. Turns out that part of it was spectacularly steep! But at the top - the view up towards Mount Charleston (the highest peak around here) was the best I have seen. I will be revisiting this view (possibly with a sheet of the Ektar that I was lucky enough to be gifted for Xmas!) at a better time for the sun... Perhaps not as Nearby as some of the posts so far, but at about a half-hour drive from home, I don't feel too guilty!

As I look out on rain in Scotland, default for next 6 months (as last 6 months) you post this?

Should be ashamed of yourself with your sunshine pornography shots

There are definitely worse views - going to miss it when we leave.
Really nice Alex. Gorgeous blue in that sky.
Thanks!
It's certainly nearer to you than it is to us. I think that counts !

You really have been spoilt for landscapes this past year, haven't you :)
Yes I very much have!! No idea where I'm off to next, but options are looking like Lincolnshire (Lincoln), Lincolnshire (middle of nowhere! And at the extremely flat side...) or London. So wherever it is, it'll be different to say the least!!
30 minutes drive in the US is very nearby.

Nice view and very scenic.
Thanks!

I would say I'm sorry, but can't in all truthfulness Whereabouts in Scotland are you? Mrs SP and I are firmly intending to settle in Scotland when I retire (15 years away yet ) and I will admit to missing Scotland lots now we can't travel to it.
Very nice and great light not something we have back here
Thanks Allan.
Very nice Alex. I do like your rugged country images (y)
Thanks Chris - have you caught The Wild West on BBC2? Very educated of the area around here. We watched the first episode last night and I think we'd been to everywhere featured
Nice scene and well shot!
Thanks!

I hate this!...

Mostly because it's nearby you, and not nearby me! :ROFLMAO:

Seriously though, the tones in the sky are beautiful, and the contrasting line of mountains between the sky and the sandy bleached foreground works really nicely.

(I don't know if it's intentional, or it's just me, but I can't click through to the full Flickr version - I'm getting a 'This photo is private' massage)

Worse places that the flatlands of Lincs ;)
Lived between Boston and Spalding for 10 years in the 70's amongst the sugar beet and Brussel sprout fields. Massive skies!

Oops... I upload them as automatically private, but try to remember to change them for this forum. Thank you for the kind comments - I've been unbelievably lucky in where I've been sent to live for the last 5-6 years, and I've been very careful to make the most off it!

It's not my favourite area I must admit... I've lived 6 years on the outskirts of Lincoln (on and off) and another 2 just south of Scunthorpe - and I thought I'd escaped...

Thanks Alison - I intend to!!

Thanks all - we were going to head up there again today, but the wind's a bit too much, and we're feeling soft...

Tomorrow it is!

So this project is now mostly going to be completed at weekends... I was given an opportunity I couldn't turn down at work over Christmas (I work on an RAF flying Squadron, and even though I'm not aircrew the Boss offered me the 2i/c slot!) However - as the Boss tested positive for COVID yesterday, I get a feeling I'm going to be busy for the next "while"...

More importantly - I have managed to get this week complete, and the technique as well. In my research, I found a few surprising things out - corn on the cob is a fruit - who knew?! And whilst I was tempted to go with that, I thought I'd try a more classically recognised fruit, but experiment with the lighting.

It's not quite what I wanted - I wanted to get just the rim lit up and everything else black, but I think for this I would need to have elevated both the apple and the light (it was sat on black velvet, with the light at the same level - I don't have any lighting stands...) Then a bit of burning in the shadows, and cropped to square to ensure I'm filling the frame!

But even though it wasn't exactly what I wanted, I'm pretty pleased with this.

It is dark though slightly better on flickr,
in a strange way I like that I have to build a picture in my mind as to what it is
it's the most minimal thing I have seen in a long time. can't help but look at it though.

Well, I'm glad you told me it was an apple, because I thought it must be a plum. Uber-minimal!

Very minimalist Alex, even if it is a tad dark ( on my monitor).
I would have guessed plum also tbh.

On my phone I can't see I thing. I don't mind dark images but is like to be able to see what it is.
On the other hand I'm all for trying new things so good effort.

Yep, that's dark! I wonder if there's something wrong with the upload, because there is what looks like "smoke" coming off the RH edge but when you zoom right in on Flickr it's a wierd pixelation... Although I saw this on another 52 last week and no one else could see it so maybe it's me!

Too dark for my tastes tbh but a very different ake on the theme!

On my phone it looks very dark and slightly blue (but that could just be my phone).
I can see the look you were going for and think it would have looked great. It just needs a bit more light.

It looks better on Flickr for definite and I think it's a good idea. Just a touch more light would look good though.

Yes it does look clearer on Flickr, it’s the sort of image I really like ....just a hint of the subject and loads of negative space, but it is difficult to get it right for general viewing when everyone is using a different phone, tablet etc. I think it needs just a tiny bit more light on the definitive edge to really make it stand out,

Points for effort but I have to agree with the others that it is a little too dark for me - I wouldn't have known what it was if I had to guess. I have just calibrated my monitor so I should be seeing things fairly accurately - slightly better on Flickr.
Congrats on the work btw.. sounds exciting!

Yes, very dark, I'll take your word on it being an apple ! Like others I would have thought plum/peach perhaps, due to the way the light highlights two high areas with a gap between them.

That's very different and so unusual that to a point, I would say it is unique. But I like your approach and all the thoughts you put behind the shot. Does it work? Is it fruit?....... Well, It is different!. :giggle:

Thanks all - kind comments on what on reflection is a somewhat sub-par photo :( I've tried again this week, and hopefully executed a bit better!

And I was indeed correct - new job is hella busy... I will do my utmost to keep up with the comments, but make no promises!!

After an as I said a bit sub-par effort last week, I've tried again with the back-lighting technique that I didn't quite pull off last.

But as a banker - I have a picture of some very dirty air over Vegas's Strip from this morning.

Back at home, there isn't much dirty left after all these are used!

I used a speedlight behind the cleaning bottles and squeegees this time rather than relying on a light-pad - they're set up on some black velvet to absorb the worst of the light, and I used a series of apertures to vary the darkness of the image - my preference was for the widest open (5.6 at 45mm on m43) of the pictures - I lost the "detail" on the top squeegee when I stopped down a little.

Hopefully the forum won't rob too much light from these pictures...
