Shugpug's 2nd 52 for 2021 - Week 6 - Pair

Both good shots for the theme, the light in the cleaning products is just enough so I can make out what they are
the Vegas picture light is so unusual to us back in the uk and there does seem to be a terrible layer of smog over the city

I think you’ve succeeded with the minimalist lighting this week Alex and it really makes the colours stand out.
I also like the landscape too. It is good to see what it’s like at the moment, across the pond.

Both good shots, but I think the minimalist / low key cleaning products is the winner.

The cleaning products for me. The lighting works well to just highlight what they are.

Dirty
The light is better this time around.
I do like the dirty air shot. Everything where you are seems so orange, do they not have any green areas?

We need a good couple of days rain to settle out to dust and the general crap in the air - there was a record breaking gap of 240 days by the last rain and the one that preceded it, so I'm not holding my breath... On a clear day after the rain, the view of the city, or of the hills surrounding the city, is stunning. But recently it's all haze and smog :(

Nice start to the year with 2 low key shots that both work, fruit is a bit dark for me though.
Thanks - on reflection, fruit was definitely a bit of a fail...

Like both, but has to be the dirty air 1st shot for me.

I do like the minimalist lighting on the products, but I think the Vegas shot edges it for me, because it's not something we see here.
Though London was worse in the 50s I believe.
A bit before my time ;) This is the worst place I've lived for air quality - but looking increasingly like I'll be going to London or surrounds next so I might have something to compare it to then...

Not naturally - there are green parks in town (mostly for flood relief, ironically...) But the desert around the city is just that! Even next to the Colorado River and Lake Mead is pretty brown. When we travel somewhere less arid now, the green almost looks strange for the first few days!

Landscape picture for me. It is a good but inherently sad reflection of modern life and human effects on the world. Well done.

Another dark one Alex. And again, it's a bit too dark for me to make out what's going on.

My favourite for the theme is the dirty air shot. Amazing to see!

I couldn't work out what was in the dark shot until I read the text and then it was obvious, so I guess for me I need a bit more light... or my glasses need cleaning, or I'm just a bit dim... if you'll forgive the pun :D

You can really see a smog in your landscape shot, the other is very dark, I am not a fan of such low key images but that's just my personal preference.

I really like low lighting shots, I could just pick out the silhouettes enough to see what they were, nice one.

Really like it. Very artistic.

I like both for different merits. The dirty air for a topical subject and the effort you put in for setting up the cleaning products.

Thanks all - still work to do on my low light shots I see... Oh well - I'll keep practicing! I would have said that normal service would be resumed this week, but instead I'm isolating following exposure to a positive case and am awaiting results for me and Mrs SP [emoji2959] You'll all have to endure at least one more "studio" style shot!

Normal service was going to be resumed this week - living near the Red Rock National Conservation area I thought this was going to be a doddle! Then I was told I had been exposed to a positive COVID case, and instead I had a few days inside to "look forward" to... Fortunately both my and Mrs SP's tests came back negative, so we're allowed out to play again tomorrow :)

So instead of the landscape type image I was planning, I've had to settle for an old stone / new stone mix. The sandstone on top is the relatively new stone from the area around here - a mere 180-190 million years old. It's on a polished slice of petrified wood from Arizona dating back about 225 million years... Light is tonight's late evening sun through the window.

I like the way it appears to be on a bed of sand too. The colours all work really well together IMO.

Definitely fits the bill, lovely colours and textures. I really like the shadows as well, the only slight thing is are some of the highlights slightly burnt out (could well just be my phone screen though) :)

Thanks folks - the highlights are definitely hot, but not quite burnt out on the tiff (but a lot of 98/99 values, so probably all but, visually indistinguishable, especially on a jpg...)

The background is black velvet which I've burnt in on PS to tone it down, as it was looking a little grey after the hdr treatment.

Lovelt colours amjd light - nice shot!

Stone
The shadow is like that of a mountain.
Nice contrasty colours and tones. The natural light with the shadows either side works really well.

interesting one! A close up on that top stone should look good.

Glad your tests were negative. Great colours and I like the contrast of textures.

Good news about the tests Alex.

Nice colours on the stones and I like the composition.

I really like the way that the shadow completes the composition.

Lovely colour contrasts between the stone and the cloth and nice soft lighting.
Glad to hear you're both okay.

Thanks - glad this one finally worked :)

It does indeed - I used it last year for "Abstract"
Great news Alex!
Amazing colours in the petrified wood!

Thanks - that was the effect I was going for - just glad it worked.
Lighting, colours and shadows all superb. Excellent photo.

Are the rock and petrified wood really that orange, or is that the effect of the late evening light?
I do like the colour that you've captured there :)
Bit of both - it lives next to a terracotta pot, and it's darker and red-er than the pottery, but it's fairly intensely coloured. We loved the Petrified Forest National Park - when we can all travel again, it's a recommended location!

Tall - there aren't that many skyscrapers here, but there are some iconic buildings (all out of bounds to me at the moment for the obvious reasons!)

The Strat is the tallest (according to Wikipedia...) and certainly stands out well - we can't see it from the house, but we can see it from the park that's outside our house!

It's not in the nicest area of town, so whilst the "obvious" shot would be at night, it's not going to happen without an escort!

The Strat isn't that far from the University / Art district. Looks like the growth hormones have been affecting the local flamingos which now are even taller than the palm trees!

Ah.... Blackpool... How I miss it! :ROFLMAO:

I love how it leads your eye through it, the composition works well.
There's something about the light though (or how you've processed it), that contrary to the glitz and glamour makes it look drab and seedy. It was uncomfortable at first glance, but settled nicely.

Nice composition for tall with the road as the leading line and the sky works very well with the scene - it's definitely tall and on theme.

I like that tall tower thingy way down the road, and a little motel sign in the FG looking almost as big. Nice compo.

Ah.... Blackpool... How I miss it!

I lol'd. It's like Blackpool only less tacky. :)

Nice composition and an interesting record shot for when you're next back in blighty long term. Esp if you come back to Blackpool and want to remember the high life :)

Looks like there could be plenty of escorts about around that area though maybe not the type you were thinking of. Nice image it’s just says America to me.
