From the backlog, captured in June 2015 and recently processed. Captured with Panasonic FZ200 bridge camera and two or three different achromats: probably Raynox 150 and Canon 500D, possibly Raynox 250. I used flash, but I don't know which flash setup I used.

The images were batch processed in DXO Optics Pro and Silkypix, with image-specific adjustments in Lightroom. The highly cropped images in the third post had additional noise reduction using Nik Dfine.

1.1 I found a ... don't know what the collective term is ... ball of spiderlings.

1.4 Close by, another one. Not hanging in mid air this one. A bit rounded, but not really a ball - too much stuff getting in the way.

1.5 And a small ball hanging in mid air.

1.6 And another bigger collection. Hanging in mid air, but not a ball this time.

1.8 With a tiny detached ball beneath it.

3.1 Having got some shots of the collection as a whole ....

3.2 ... I tried closing in. Not brilliant quality because I had to crop a lot - with all the movement going on it wasn't practical to use a lot of magnification so I shot with less magnification and cropped. The FZ200 has a small, 1/2.3" sensor (like in a mobile phone) so heavy cropping doesn't produce terribly good results.

It was around 4.10pm by now, and I felt I had done about as much as I could, so I went away. but I didn't go far and when I looked back after 10 minutes or so I saw that the spiderlings were gathering back together again.

I love the colours of the Araneus diadematus spiderlings :D

Great capture nick, I have never seen this either.
I'm sure if you search yellow spiderlins you will find lots of info.

Thanks Graham.

You are right. Loads of photos. Looks like they are Garden spider (Areneus diadematus) [Just like I see Alastair already told me, above, and I'd already forgotten! My memory. What a black hole it is. :( ]

Thanks for the ID Alastair. :)

Thanks. I have never seen it before either. :)

Perhaps the flash caused it. But perhaps not, because I took lots of photos of the other groups but none of them split up.

I'm not a spider 'expert' so forgive me if this is wrong, but ISTR that (depending on the species) spiderlings split up from the group and some species then exude a long thread of web-silk until the breeze catches the thread and carries them off airborne, thus dispersing them across the downwind area until the thread snags on something and they find a new home. Others just spread out from their hatching place and make progress from there.

Groups of dispersing spider hatchings are an interesting sight, until you inadvertently walk through one when walking through long vegetation and end up covered in them... not the best result if you aren't awfully keen on spiders!

That's interesting. Thanks. Seems like there was a bit of a false start here as far as dispersion goes, with them gathering back together again.

I can imagine my wife being freaked out by that. She doesn't like being in the same room as just one spider. :D
