Just back from Germany and plastic bottles like those you get mineral water in have a 25 euro cent deposit levied on them.
Works ok in a city the size of Berlin, so no reason it wouldn't be the same here.
One good idea I saw at the airport was a bin to put them in so that the deposit goes to charity.
Also saw lots of dossers going down the bins looking for them, suppose at least more end up getting recycled that way.
