A early start so the Barn owl successfully find prey just after first light so the only Bird I could get on a post was a Stonechat ,largish crop with the 400mm 5.6 but better than nothing Stonechat Feb 13th 2016 by dennis greenwood, on Flickr

I see you use a 400mm f/5.6 which is one lens I keep looking at, I know it doesn't have IS but I suppose that if I keep a decent shutter speed I should be ok with using one
