I've been fiddling about with updates and decrypting and other magical sorcery with my Mac, and have somehow (and no idea at all how) have managed to convert my photoshop 'layer mask' in to a 'vector mask'

So, when I click on the icon on the layers panel, it says 'Add layer mask', however, when I attempt to use the black or white brushes, the mask I've created is now a 'vector mask' and I can't do anything with the brushes!

In complete simpletons terms ( and I REALLY mean simpletons!!!) please can someone give me a 'shopping list' style instruction about how to return it to a simple layer mask?

thanks in advance (and I can't emphasise the simpleton shopping list style of 'do this, then do that' that assumes you know nothing whatsoever) ;)
 
How about uninstalling then reinstalling photoshop so that it goes back to scratch settings?

Try resetting photoshop preferences (ctrl/alt/shift as PS starts loading cmd/opt/shift on a mac) that often fixes weird stuff with PS.
