Wild Swans! …post them in this communal thread.

If only I could've zoomed out or walked backwards fast enough - Grr!

My son says:

…the swan's name is Samson and it just pushes the sides
to make the frame fall and be free!

…you know, he must be right! :)

Very elegant male you caught there, Peter!
Some remarks if I may:
— the bird is too close to the left edge
— the take is a tad slanted
— the DRL needs tweaking
— WB too
— use highlights recovery
— possibly tweak down the mid tones

I could illustrate but your EDIT says NO.
No problems, I'm always up for advice. I set WB to auto, what does DRL mean?

Thanks;
Pete

I was using a lot of different focus selections on AF-C on the D810 today, 3D focus tracking, single focus point, 5 focus points.........really not sure what's best to be honest ?

When shooting wildlife, I go for back button continuous
single point focus and no 3D! This is what I setup but
you have to try to see if this is the better thing for you!

Tell me this and tell me no more; if using 'back button focus' do you constantly keep the back button pressed in ALL THE TIME whilst about to press the main shutter button for the capture...?

I tried back button focus a while ago but wasn't sure if I was doing it right.

Thanx;
Pete

Tell me this and tell me no more;
Am I to understand that I talk too much?

In the menu you can select release, BB or both.
I choose BB only. I press it once and upon trigger
of one or more shots the focus will be frozen on
that point… cool if the subject is not moving closer
or else but if I have to follow a BiF for example, I
then press continuously.

LoL .... I did think of calling it "Don't fence me in" :)

This female teenager seems to know her charms so
irresistible that she didn't mind at all, right in front of
my lens, to do her morning grooming!

Why does your swan look "powdery"", Mike?

Sure, a lady will take pictures like these! ;-)

Do I see that they are a tad dark and slanted?
The WB looks spot on…

Probably but as I said they were just grab shots as it happened, not a lot of time to think

…yes but you could, Ingrid, solve these
issues quickly and easily in PP! no?

Unfortunately wildlife doesn't always pose exactly where we want it.
I wasn't out to take pictures of swans, heard a noise and these 2 were mating, female under the water
It was when she surfaced that this happened, something I knew about but always thought was a pre-mating ritual,
As I said not a lot of time to compose a shot and if I had tried to straighten it the birds would have been very cramped in the frame,
they weren't intended to be shown, only added them to your thread for the unusual point of view.
As for being dark, well that's my preference rather then having bright glaring whites, but I can easily remove them if you wish

…a lot better, Mike!

though to remember here, is that
waiting a fraction of second so the
swan could leave the shadowy area
would have helped limiting the nasty

effects of a too wide dynamic range.

…in the mid-afternoon sun…

I'm a total beginner and don't have any editing software other than a basic crop and straighten app so it's not the best but I'd still like to share a couple I took this afternoon at my local country park.

Hi Esther, welcome!

Your image did not make it to the thread!

I know sorry I'm trying to figure out how to link it, I didn't realise it'd posted.

Apologies for that, I thought I'd pressed preview not post reply, hopefully they'll show this time.
