The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I had that lens briefly and found it slow to focus, frequently missing a bit and sometimes just sawing back & forth without a lock - on an A7III. I know some find it OK, but it was probably the worst AF experience I've had since the 1980s. If you can, I'd try to send it back & pick up the kit 28-70 for similar money for general shots, because it's simply much better unless you need a large aperture/shallow depth of field/super-sharpness.

If you've been using a 50 on the 6000 then consider the 85 f1.8 for low weight a super-quick focussing at reasonable cost.

On an A7 it wont be the lens holding it back, it will be the camera. Even with the fastest lens the A7 cant compete with an A6000, especially in AFC.

Hey chaps, I'm a Sony A7 owner (as of a few days ago) and picked up a new 50mm f1.8 to compliment it yesterday.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with auto focus on the A7. On my Sony a6000 I usually have it in AF-C and Wide. That works for most shots but when it doesn't the Centre button does a AF-S Centre auto focus and I then re-frame like I used to with my DSLR. This combination covers most of my shooting.

I can't seem to replicate this with the A7. The button for Center is set to "Standard" on the a6000 but the A7 doesn't seem to have that option. I shoot both in aperture priority most of the time. Any ideas?
I’ve not heard of that setup before, maybe it’s exclusive to the a6xxx series? I’ve heard where a button change focus mode, but not where it switches to a different focus mode with a set focus point. I’m pretty new to the Sony A7 series still though.
It's a big step back from the a6000 and 50mm (OSS) combo for AF. It's a bit hit and miss getting my kids in focus. I do like the field of view though, it's wider than I expected coming from the crop sensor.

I was going to slowly transition to full frame but I think I might keep my a6000 setup too now. At some point I'd like an A7 III and that might retire the a6000.

Anyway, one from yesterday when the lens was about 2 hours old. :D

Renders nicely though, has nice 3D pop

If the AF worked properly it would be a super lens, and would cannibalise sales of the 55.
I know we are going in circles a bit but seriously it's pretty accurate for shooting people. I wouldn't count on it to shoot an active erratic dog but it's fairly reliable for humans.

I'm trying to stay away from online shopping this weekend. I'm so close to buying the 6400 +18-135 combo as an upgrade to my a6000. Its an upgrade that I don't need, driven by frustration at the process of getting photos from my camera to my phone and better GPS functionality via Bluetooth. The real test of willpower will be next weekend as it is payday...

Any love in here for the Sony 24-105 f4 ?

Considering it as occasional walk about solution.

It's a great lens, I borrowed a friend's for a while while he was going through an intense relationship with his 24 GM. I was so impressed I bought one for myself as my travel lens

I bought one on here and find it really versatile. Took both cameras out last night into city centre, one with 70-200 f/2.8, the other with 24-105. Took more shots with the 24-105mm and it will be the only lens going out today on the family run.

Has anyone here got/used the Sony ECM-B1M shotgun microphone?

Yes, I've already replied asking to cancel. Will never use this crew again.

Has Ali been in here recently? Just wondered how things were going with the A7II.

We're still isolating here. I'd love a day up the hills :D

The amount of stuff that goes "missing" must be epic.

My most used lens on travels. It's great.

Yes.
I sold the 28-70 kit lens and bought the 24-105mm lens.
I think it's a great lens.

Thanks chaps. Very helpful. No decision yet...my want list has to be culled..

Cancel. Definitely.

I'm still waiting on a car battery for the old Escort from Europarts which is now at 17 days. I've even lodged a PayPal claim on Friday and still no response from them at all. I ordered one after putting the claim in from Tayna, had a tracking email in the afternoon, and DHL email early hours Saturday saying it'll be delivered on Tuesday (which is pretty much next day)

Better lens than the 24-70gm imo. I've had three samples of the GM and been dissapointed with every one, its ok if you only want 24 to 50mm.

Euro car parts? worst company I've ever dealt with, never again.

Yes and I'm one of them! I should of gone for the 100-400mm....hindsight is a wonderful thing.
It made me buy an A9 and so glad I did. My R4 is packed up ready to be traded in tomorrow.

my biggest issue with this is that this not a consistent issue. For example couple other forum members and I don't have a problem but there also few forum members such as yourselves that have had problems.
Now if Sony does go "fix" this via. fw update or recall or whatever what is to say it will not break it for us.
I don't like issues that's not consistently reproducible by everyone.

Honestly if the R5 wasn't coming in at like £6K I'd have considered my options....

A7 and my old Sigma 50mm f2.8.

The mythical R5 with specs not 100% confirmed yet and who know how many teething issues. Nice one. :ROFLMAO:

With the attitude sony has towards it I personally can't see it being fixed any time soon. I sent a very detailed email and included youtube videos. Sony europe passed it on to Japan as they couldn't find anything and then neither could Japan. Whats to say they tested a few bodies to find the issue, they just told me to use a different focus mode even though I've tried them all. It's exactly what happened with the 24-70GM and A7Rii / A7ii compatibility issues and I even managed to replicate that with my Rii and the reps Rii / 7ii in a sony store.
