The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Look into the 16-35 f4, not really a wide guy but it looks a cracking lens for far less than a GM. From what I recall around £600-650 used.
I hope it’s not that cheap, I’ve had my pants down if it is

Looking at prices online for the Sony A7R4, £2200 for grey import or £3500 to buy in the UK  I can buy the A7R4 and the 24mm 1.4 GM for less than the price of the body in the UK, madness .
Crazy difference that, despite me wanting to stay away from grey I’d even be tempted at that. I bought UK as I got £400 off the camera and grey prices were still around £2700 IIRC. If the A9-II reached around £2k grey I’d be seriously tempted

Certainly I think the premise of a 'best prime' is flawed and basically pointless article because there's so many different aspects to cover that choosing a singular prime lens or any other category is pretty much worthless. I am a big fan of the 28mm F2 as it's small, light, cheap and I find it decent optically and crucially it works well in the gimbal and easy to balance.

I have nothing against the 28mm f2, it's not a focal length I tend to go for but I'd have one if the price was right. I just wouldn't have picked that lens as the best prime for the system but I suppose it depends on how you decide what the best is. I was tending to think that by best they meant technically best and if that was the case I don't know what's technically the best. I know people do rave about the 24mm and the 90mm macro too, I don't know what else in the running.

Of the lenses I have, Sony 20, 35, 55 and 85mm f1.8's, 35mm f2.8 and 28-70mm, Voigtlander 35mm f1.4, 40mm f1.2 and 50mm f2, I think the Voigtlander 50mm f2 is technically the best and amongst the AF lenses the 20mm f1.8 is I think technically the best. I suppose we could make an argument for any lens being the best. At the mo I prefer the Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 as with a close up filter it'll do a lot of things I want it to do.

like the 135mm's my preference with the colour rendition is with the sigma. these will sell very, very well.

I agree.

Just trying to speculate what the grey price will be using the new sigma 100-400 as an example (£899 UK, £649 grey).

This should hopefully come in at around £749 grey (£999 UK).

Looking at the prices I can see the attraction of grey imports. Doing business in the UK is expensive and of course part of the expense goes towards keeping people employed in the UK on decent wages and paying for the NHS and the other good stuff. In the past I've usually only bought grey when UK stock is difficult to get hold of but I can't really criticise anyone for going for grey market kit as the price differences are sometimes hard to ignore.

Guys. Am I right in thinking Panamoz are the better bet than E-infinity?
It's horses for courses. Panamoz gives the better warranty, but I've used both, with no problems, and it's a case of who has what stock and at what price. For instance, I've just ordered a Sony 10-18 from E-Infin at just over £500. Panamoz was well over £600 - both in stock. Other times the reverse applies.

Warranty-wise definitely. Some have luck getting them to price match E-Infinity but I've never had any luck with that.

E-infinity will always have the cheaper on shelf price. There customer service is atrocious though.

Best bet is email Panamoz and ask them to price match. Even if they can’t they will likely offer some sort of discount.

Panamoz will give you a 3 year warranty as well and are very good with returns if needed. E-infinity will give a 1 year warranty and it’s luck of the draw on if they will honour it or not. For example even in this thead people have mentioned that they won’t allow a return if a lens is decentered. Friends of mine have had the same issue.

I've bought from both.
As above, warranty is better on Panamoz.
I've asked panamoz to match e-infinity, and although they haven't matched exactly, I've received a discount, so not far away.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I was thinking more warranty wise. 20G or 24GM......

20mm 750 E-finitely - 900 Panamoz

24mm 999 - 1150

MPB want 1195 I think for a used 24GM

I have the Samyang 24/1.4 with me as we've shot Milky Way so I'm trying to use it for other stuff this week....

TBH warranty doesn’t worry me. I’ve been buying cameras since 1965, and bar a problem with a used Pentax SP500 I bought from Dixons in 1972, have never had to make any claim. I know that’s tempting fate, but ...

I think Panama’s prices have been quite high for some time now. Some lenses are no cheaper to only fractionally cheaper than UK.

Yeah. Finding it difficult to decide really what to do. Plus even which lens... The 20G must be pretty popular as it's very thin on the ground used! Probably the most tempting of the two but will I later regret that f/1.4......

The 20mm hasn’t been available for that long would expect that is the reason there isn’t many used copies around.

Haven’t used the 20mm but is supposed to very good but not as good for Milky Way etc as the 24.

The 24GM is superb and with there not being a huge difference in price between the two if you don’t need the wider lens it’s a no brainer really.

Yeah. Thanks. I currently use the Voigtländer 21/3.5 for hiking landscape and the Samyang 24/1.4 for Milky Way.

Both Sony lenses share the 67mm filter size of the FE85 too.

Think I posted that a few pages back.

Oops sorry. Stunning release from Sigma though eh, I'd say the best 85mm on E-Mount

Sigma seem to be the lens company to beat right now - no-one else can match them for absolute technical quality AND rendering where they've really gone for it. If they make their new gen of lenses in mounts for all mirrorless then it really will level the playingfield unless people need specialised lenses that only the makers may provide in the future (I don't see any tilt-shift lenses for mirrorless yet).
