The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

Anyone else manage to get the John Lewis deal this morning.

Looks like it’s probably a pricing mistake so will likely be cancelled but I have had an order confirmation for the 2 units I ordered. With cash back brings them down to £1049.

Wow, be interesting to see if those sales go through. Just above this [now out of stock] they have the same for £1799 - have they realised the error and pulled it? Or other opportunists have swooped them all up :D

Deal! If they don’t cancel the order

They will probably be cancelled, but if your not in you can't win.

I don't need them anyway but if they do ship them I will just stick 2 of my grey bodies on eBay and these will replace them. So 2 new bodies and a little cash in the back pocket.

So am I....I don't get an article :p

There're many comments like this is click bait, why should I care what you use etc. but I think that these articles at least give some reasons why someone might switch and may be at least some use to anyone thinking of swapping system and getting it straight in their own minds..

I had Canon DSLR's for something like 12 years or more and a Nikon SLR for 20/25 years or something like that.

Waiting patiently for @addicknchips impressions on the 85mm from last night like...

Thing is, you should know when you need to change, try it for yourself. It's a bit silly to read someone made the jump and somehow that would also work for you as well.

There are a million YouTube videos like this, "why I switch to X", "Why I switch back to Y". Who gives a damn (although a lot of people do). If it works for you, fantastic. Everyone's circumstances is different, the most important thing is to get something that you can get the most out of. Sure, sharing experience is great but a lot of these are, like you said, click bait.

I think you can learn a bit from reading other peoples views especially if you have similar kit to what they've ditched. Specialist shops can be few and far between, none in Middlesbrough that I can see, and even if there was one the advice people in shops give can be next to worthless so what's left? On line searching for reviews, forums and blogs. I do think they can help.

Someone got one for this price in store in John Lewis (evidence on a hotukdeals post) so looks like they may also go through online. Looks like there was some stock (but small quantities) this morning online which obviously all sold out very quickly. Somone has also had a dispatch notice from an online order.

So looks like you may be in luck!

Check your local John Lewis stores as they may have some

I'd have bought one too just to sell on again and make a bit of profit (y)

Did Sony give Sigma the relevant info to make their E-mount lenses did Sigma have to reverse engineer like they had to with Canon EF and Nikon F mount? If it's the latter how long has it taken them to reverse engineer?

E-Mount is open, no need for any third party to reverse engineer, which is partly why some of the the third party lenses like the Sigma Art's are so amazing. Even if Sigma bring out Nikon and Canon mirrorless versions they will never be as good as everything will have to reverse engineered.

I didnt know that so Sony will give you access to all the specs you need to make lenses. While Canon and Nikon wont.

Good on Sony. I’ve never understood why Canikon have never given the same access. I understand they want people to buy their own lenses but people will always buy third party regardless. For the most part they work perfectly well anyway.

It’s like Canikon restricting AF lenses to those made in Japan/Asia I believe, so we can only have things like Zeiss in manual focus o_O

Looking at Sigma lenses for Sony it seems like they just clamped adapters on end of the dslr version.

They don’t though, think about how many posts there has been on this forum alone about focus issues with third party lenses. A large reason for that is because they are having to reverse engineer the a.f algorithms.

I think Sony vet who they'll give the info too. I think you have to be a reputable company which is going to produce something worthwhile... or something like that. I think there was an instance recently of a tutor at Uni (or something like that) who'd applied for the mount info and was refused and then kicked off a bit.

Have you had your shipping details yet? Bargain if you do - no wonder they are out of stock lol! You can claim cahsback too

Not sure if that is correct they will provide to any manufacturer free of charge as long as they sign a licence agreement. They even have that stated on the Sony website. Likely that guy refused to sign the licence agreement.

Nothing as yet, I am still expecting them to be cancelled. Haven't bought from John Lewis before so not sure how long shipping confirmation takes. Yep, works out at £1050 a piece after the cash back.

Ordered a couple of times and got order confirmation straight away but the guarantee and despatch email didnt come until 6pm ish.

Think about it the other way, Nikon/Canon always restricted it, but Sony had to do something to catch up. They couldn’t make 20-25 lenses from scratch so they let other people do it for them. Therefore ultimately making the system popular a lot quicker.

How many of us would have a Sony camera here if there was no (or little) third party glass?

Yeah I had both order confirmations pretty quickly, fingers crossed for the dispatch email later on.
