The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I'm not up on PRS models, and the 513 was the only 3 PU version I knew of.

They are really close, i forgot the difference tbh. I think the 513 is slightly shorter, mahogany, rosewood fretboard whereas 305 is 25.5", maple fretboard and alder body.

There is also the DC3, which has more a Strat body, except it isn't a Strat scale length.

Another boring one guys. What quality cards do you recommend right now for the A9? After many years of CF and XQD, advice would be welcome. Not needing the fastest out there, looking for reliability and decent value for a quality card. I'm usually picking my shots apart from occasional small bursts and shooting JPEG + JPEG rather than RAW. Thanks.

These are good if you don’t want UHS-II

Integral 256GB micro SD card 4K video Premium High Speed memory card microSDXC Up to 100MB/s V30 UHS-I U3 A1 C10 https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07FC7W2G5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_pADREbGXPETNS

If you are transferring lots of files at a time you would be much better with UHS-II

I use a SanDisk 300mb/s UHS-2 in slot 1 and a SanDisk extreme pro 95mb/s UHS-1 in slot 2. Often I shoot to only the first card to get that little bit of extra speed the A9 can give. Im not sure if its the same with the A9 but its possible shooting JPEG will be slower than RAW due to the processing to create the JPEG thats needed compared to RAW.

Its the read and write speeds you need to be aware of with cards. Usually they describe a card using the read speed whist the write speed can be lower. The integral card above is an example of that, it's 100MB/s read and 50MB/s write.

Oops I linked the wrong card in previous post this should be the right one.

Integral 256GB SD Card 8K and 4K Video Read 180MB/s and Write 130MB/s SDXC V30 U3 Our fastest ever card https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0845H79HH/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_OYDREb3BB4EB1

If you decide to go for UHS-II cards it’s worth noting that the A9’s maximum write speed is 189mbs and that is only with the Sony 300mb tough card others cards like Sandisk Extreme pro 300 are slower in the A9 at just under 147 mbs so no point paying for a 300mb write speed card.

With memory cards the V rating describes the minimum average write speeds so be careful there as some cards that state fast write speeds but actually only have a v90, V60, v30 rating which means average write speed is only 90mbs, 60mbs or 30mbs etc.

Memory cards are a bit of a minefield as their are so many variables. The speed of the camera, the speed of the card and the same speed cards cards from different manufacturers perform differently depending on the camera model.

For example the two fastest cards on the market are the Sony tough card and the Sandisk Extreme Pro 300. The Sandisk extreme pro's write speed is rated slightly higher than the Sony, but the Sony card performs a fair bit better in the A9 and the A9II than the Sandisk card. In other cameras the Sandisk card will outperform the Sony.

Thank you very much for all that detail rob-nikon and f/2.8. Really very useful and a great launchpad for today's card search. I particularly like the below, something I probably wouldn't have found out otherwise and will save me a few quid. Cheers guys. :ty:

It's all a bit boring but I had looked into this all recently when I was looking for fast cards for my A9II.

The A9II is different again the Sony Tough cards can do 220mbs in the A9II as it has a newer card module. The Sandisk 300's do 198mbs.

I’m just wary of the amount of scammers on there and the fact eBay/ PayPal sides with the seller 75% of the time.
eBay/PayPal always sides with the buyer in my experience and that's why a lot of sellers inc. me dislike them.
I am intrigued why you feel they side with seller, wish they did...

I used to use a website called ‘cameramemoryspeed.com’ when choosing cards for Nikon cameras. I didn’t think they covered sony but it seems the A9 is covered.

https://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/sony-a9/fastest-sd-cards-uhs-i-vs-uhs-ii/

I wasn’t aware the A9 limited card write speed. I guess in a way the big buffer makes up for it.

That site is quite outdated for the A9 now as they haven't tested any of the newer cards, I came across another with very recent information but I can't remember the name of it off hand.

You’re right, it seems a token gesture on Sony cameras. I have a feeling for most cameras they run the tests only once. The A9 test date is 2017.

Capacitors, macro and mono.

more lockdown boredom.......

Decided on the Samyang 45mm f1.8 and it arrived today, it sure is sharp and just need to find the ideal focus settings in the menu, any tips?

A-mount lens enthusiasts may find the interesting:

IMHO Sony should have provided this long back if it was technically possible. The fact that they didn't might just be the thing to push me over to canon. But then again I love some Minolta lenses

I read something similar somewhere else but unfortunately I can't remember where. What I read was that someone did it for a personal project and it's snowballed from there.

When my sister got married, future brother in la asked me to drive his escort like this to the reception so they could zoom off on honeymoon.
It was already at least ten years old and nearly scared me to death with the bouncy handling compared to newer cars.
Just getting used to it though, there was nothing wrong with it.

Love the duck pics, they let you get really close as I see you didn’t even need the full 600mm

I had to hook the dog to a post as they don't let me near with her :ROFLMAO:

She ran head on into an adult swan a couple of weeks ago which was fun. She normally rushes the geese and ducks to make them jump into the water, the swan didn't see her coming and she just piled into it. Then they both just stood there not knowing what to do. I keep her on the lead mostly at this time of year with so many young ones about.
