The Formula 1 / IndyCar Thread

Honda have announced their withdrawal from F1 after the 2021 season.
Slowly but surely F1 is contracting Honda was a bit of a suprise but then the big teams like merc have been hovering around being an engine supplier rather than a team Its not so far away from those that want to see drivers racing in identicle cars will get there wish
But its not for me
Its that technical now even the FIA cant keep pace with it
There is so many rules that even the teams can keep pace with it
And now the idiots have introduced world politics into F1
If it vanished off the silver screen tommorrow I am sure I wouldnt be that bothered
Even the interest in this forum has ebbed away

I have to say that it has become a very technical sport. Gone are the days of a NA 3.0L V10. So much is now "monitored" and checked that it's even stifling the development that we would normally see.

Then there is the politics. I really like LH44 as a driver, but his constant moaning about "what everybody should do" has switched me off from him now. I'm following the other young British drivers coming through. It's good to see some coming through.

If Bottas retires from the race, Hamilton wins the title
If Hamilton finishes ahead of Bottas, Hamilton wins the title
A win plus fastest lap for Bottas is the only result which ensures the championship battle continues regardless of where Hamilton finishes
In any scenario where the pair end the year tied on points Hamilton will win because Bottas cannot beat him on count-back by winning more races

Knowing Hamilton, he will want to not only win it, but also get that fastest lap, that's how competitive he is. Even in a season where he has totally dominated, he's still a racer, he still wants to be first over the line, it's just his mentality.

It was extremely slippery in FP1, and even in FP2 when it was more grippy they were still way off JPM's lap record. Tomorrow should be interesting, although I imagine once they feed all the data into the simulations overnight they'll all have a better handle on car setup.

Good of Leclerc to let his team-mate qualify ahead of him, although it does mean at least one almost guaranteed overtake for him! :)

That was a very entertaining qualifying. I wonder if they had let Max stay out on the wets, would he have got faster, given that Perez had already gone faster than him on the inters?

Occasionally entertaining race too!

Congratulations to LH for wrapping up the WDC with a win. Not sure about GOAT (impossible to compare drivers from different eras) but definitely the best in the "modern" era.

Classiest thing I've ever seen from SV while Lewis was still in the car too.

Looking at that drivers table tells you one thing. Hamilton has finished every GP getting points, Bottas has 2 DNF's, but has scored points in all the other races. Hamilton & Mercedes have been so consistent, and so good this year, the others teams need to take stock. If you don't consistently finish in the points, you won't win anything....

To drag up a tired old saw, to finish first, first you have to finish.

Did the car breaking in half aid his exit?
Seems impossible to survive.

Very very lucky there. I have to say I wasn't a fan of the Halo, but i'm very happy to have been proved wrong. As they are saying in commentary, it is a good job he was able to get out himself, a lot of wasted firefighting media there from the marshals. Great to see him out and pretty much ok.

Sorry, what was wasted?

That was quite a shocker. Seeing huge accidents in IndyCar is not a rarity, it is in Formula 1.

Glad that he’s relatively unscathed.

Sorry, what was wasted?

The amount of dry powder being applied on nothing, rather than onto the fire. Also not sure why they felt the need to then apply dry powder to the driver and medical guy as they walked away from the scene. Obviously the extinguishers only have a very limited amount of content, probably 9Kg, yes, test it works before getting close, but don't waste it by not hitting the fire.

Maybe because his feet and shoes were burning?
