Ok, to point out one from slightly earlier... They have entire forests of these, it's been in my housemates family for something stupid like 50 or 60 years...

Not all examples of this item look the same... They vary in size, shape and colour BUT they all start off the same and it takes a loooong time for them to end up this way....

About 2.5 inches long

Steph Clue: This clue (has been said before... "It is not technically wood" does actually contain a clue... Kind of...
 
Just trying to see what things you would find in a forest to give us some idea.

Anyone else got any ideas?
